Hotjar Review: Are Website Heatmaps Worth It in 2026?
TL;DR: Heatmaps are worth it. Paying for them is a different question. This Hotjar review finds its heatmaps and recordings are now matched by free tools, so what you are really buying is the survey layer — the ability to ask a visitor why they left. If you will not use that, install a free tool and keep the money.

1. Introduction

For a decade, Hotjar was the answer to a simple question: what are people actually doing on my website? It made heatmaps normal. Marketers who had never opened an analytics report could open a heatmap and instantly see that nobody scrolled to the enquiry form.

Two things changed. Microsoft gave away the same core features for free, and in July 2025 Hotjar merged into Contentsquare. So the 2026 decision is not “heatmaps, yes or no” any more. It is “what am I paying Hotjar for that I cannot get for RM 0?”

That is the question this Hotjar review answers. We run websites for Malaysian SMEs at ZenWeb, so the test is practical: does the tool change what we ship, and does the subscription earn its place in a small marketing budget?

Visitors landing, nobody enquiring?

2. What Is Hotjar and What Do You Actually Get?

Quick Answer: Hotjar is a behaviour analytics tool with two halves. The watching half gives you heatmaps, recordings and funnels. The asking half gives you on-page surveys and feedback widgets. Free tools have caught up on the watching. Nothing free matches the asking.

Split it that way and the decision gets easier. If heatmaps are new to you, our plain-English guide to what a heatmap actually shows is the fastest way in.

  • Heatmaps. Clicks, taps and scroll depth, layered onto a picture of the page. Answers “does anyone reach the enquiry form?”
  • Session recordings. A replay of one anonymous visit — hesitation, rage clicks, the moment somebody gives up.
  • Funnels and dashboards. Where visitors drop out of a multi-step path, tied back to the recordings of the people who dropped.
  • Surveys and feedback widgets. A question fired at a visitor at a chosen moment — on exit, after scrolling, on a specific page.

The fourth item is the one to hold on to. Everything above it explains what happened. Only a survey tells you why — the gap no heatmap ever closes.

Key takeaway: You are not buying heatmaps in 2026 — those are free elsewhere. You are buying the ability to ask a stranger a question while they are on the page.

3. Hotjar Is Now Contentsquare: What That Changes for You

Quick Answer: On 1 July 2025 Hotjar merged into Contentsquare. Heatmaps, recordings and surveys still exist, but they sit inside a bigger enterprise platform, and plans are renamed Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise. Sign up in 2026 and you are buying Contentsquare, not the old Hotjar.

Most reviews still quote the old plan names, and they are out of date. Contentsquare confirms in its own documentation that Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare Group and the plan structure is now Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise. Click Hotjar’s own pricing link today and it lands you on Contentsquare’s page.

Three practical consequences for a Malaysian SME:

  • The product is moving upmarket. Contentsquare sells to enterprise teams. A five-person marketing team is no longer the centre of the roadmap.
  • Plan names and limits shift. Any pricing table you read in a Hotjar review — including the tiers most 2026 listicles still quote — may already be a generation behind. Check the live page before you commit.
  • Billing changed hands. Existing accounts have been migrating across, so the entity you pay is not the one you signed up with.
Key takeaway: The Hotjar you remember is now a Contentsquare product. Verify pricing on the live page, not on a review — including this one.

4. The Real Cost Is Sampling, Not the Subscription

Quick Answer: Every Hotjar plan carries a daily session cap. Go over it and Hotjar samples your traffic — you see a slice of your visitors, not all of them. On a busy Malaysian site, the free tier can show you a single-digit percentage of what happened.

Hotjar’s documentation spells the mechanic out. Each site has a daily session capture limit, and traffic coverage is your plan’s daily limit divided by your potential traffic — a 500-session plan on a site getting 1,000 sessions a day gives you 50% coverage. Run out entirely and no new recordings or heatmap data arrive until the reset date. Apply that formula to real Malaysian SME traffic levels, on a small cap of 35 sessions a day.

Traffic Coverage on a 35-Session Daily Cap, by Site Size

Monthly visitorsShare of sessions capturedCoverage
Under 1,000 (~33/day)
100%
3,000 (~100/day)
35%
9,000 (~300/day)
12%
30,000 (~1,000/day)
4%
90,000 (~3,000/day)
1%

Modelled scenario: coverage calculated with Hotjar’s own formula (plan daily limit ÷ potential traffic) against typical ZenWeb client traffic bands, 2026. Not empirical Hotjar data.

Read the bottom rows carefully. A busy site on a capped plan is watching a thin sliver of its visitors while assuming it saw the whole picture. That is how a team ends up redesigning a page on the strength of 12 sessions.

Key takeaway: The plan price is not the cost. The cost is the traffic you never see — check your coverage percentage before trusting any heatmap.

5. Hotjar vs Microsoft Clarity: Which One Should You Install?

Quick Answer: Install Clarity first. It is free, uncapped, and covers heatmaps and recordings. Add Hotjar only when you need to ask visitors questions, or need data older than Clarity’s 30-day memory. For most Malaysian SMEs, that day never comes.

This is the comparison that decides the money, so any honest Hotjar review has to lead with it. The full field is covered in our roundup of the best heatmap tools for Malaysian websites.

What you needHotjarMicrosoft Clarity
Heatmaps and recordingsYes, capped by daily sessionsYes, no traffic cap
On-page surveys and feedbackYes — its real advantageNo
Data historyLonger, plan-dependent30 days, then gone
Cost for a Malaysian SMEFree tier, then a monthly feeFree, permanently

Row two is the whole argument. Everything else here, Clarity does for nothing — as our Microsoft Clarity review lays out. For the wider stack, see our guide to the best web analytics tools beyond Google.

Key takeaway: If your shortlist is “Hotjar or Clarity”, install Clarity today and revisit Hotjar the week you have a question only a visitor can answer.

6. Surveys Are the Only Reason to Pay for Hotjar

Quick Answer: A heatmap shows that visitors abandoned the quote form. A one-question survey tells you they left because the price was not on the page. Placement decides whether anyone answers — exit-intent questions far outperform pop-ups on arrival.

We run surveys on client sites through Hotjar and log what comes back. Placement is the difference between a survey that earns its subscription and one that annoys people.

Exit intent on a pricing page4.1%The objection, in the visitor’s words
After 50% scroll on a service page2.6%Missing information they expected

Pop-up on arrival0.7%Little — and it costs you goodwill

The thank-you page row is the one teams forget. People who just enquired are the friendliest audience you will ever have, and they will tell you what almost put them off. That single question has reshaped more of our client landing pages that were not converting than any heatmap.

Key takeaway: Ask one question, at exit or on the thank-you page, and never on arrival. A survey that interrupts is worse than no survey.

7. Do the Findings Actually Lift Conversions?

Quick Answer: Yes — but the biggest lifts came from what visitors told us, not what the heatmap showed. Survey-led fixes changed what a page said. Heatmap-led fixes changed where things sat. Both worked; the survey-led ones worked harder.

Every change below came from a Hotjar finding, measured against the 30 days before it went live. Page-level enquiry rates, not site-wide averages.

Source: ZenWeb operational data, 35+ Malaysian SME pages measured 30 days before and after each change, 2024–2026.

The top two rows were missing-information problems. No heatmap could have found them — nothing was being clicked wrongly, the answer visitors wanted simply was not on the page. That is the ceiling of watching, and the reason asking is worth money. It also feeds a healthier conversion funnel.

Key takeaway: Heatmaps fix layout problems. Surveys fix content problems — and content problems are usually the expensive ones.

8. Are Malaysian SMEs Still Paying for Hotjar?

Quick Answer: Fewer are, and Clarity is the reason rather than any fault of Hotjar’s. Across the sites we manage, paid Hotjar accounts peaked and have drifted down since free heatmaps arrived. The accounts that stay are the ones running surveys.

Here is the shift across the Malaysian SME websites we manage, with 2027 projected from the trend.

The survey row barely moves, and that is the miss this Hotjar review keeps coming back to. The one capability worth paying for is the one almost nobody switches on. Teams buy Hotjar for heatmaps they could have had free, then never ask a single question.

Key takeaway: If you pay for Hotjar and never run a survey, you are buying a free product. Switch the surveys on, or cancel.

9. Recordings, PDPA and Malaysian Sites

Quick Answer: Recordings capture real people using your site, so treat them as personal data handling. Keep input masking on, disclose the tracking in your privacy policy, and never unmask a form that collects IC numbers, medical details or payment information.

Three checks before you switch recordings on — they matter far more for a clinic than a café.

  • Leave masking alone. The default suppresses what visitors type. Turning it off to “see more” is how sensitive data ends up in a replay you never meant to store.
  • Disclose it. Your privacy policy should name the behaviour tracking and what it collects. Our guide to PDPA and data privacy for Malaysian marketers covers what to say.
  • Know the session limits. A session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity and caps at four hours, per Hotjar’s documentation — worth knowing before you argue with a number in a report.
Key takeaway: Masking on, policy updated, sensitive pages excluded. Do that once and recordings are a low-risk install.

10. How to Get Value From Hotjar in Your First Month

Quick Answer: Point the tracking at one money page, not the whole site — that spends a capped session allowance where it counts. Then run one survey, watch five recordings, ship one fix. A month of Hotjar should end with a changed page, not a folder of screenshots.

Step three is what separates a useful subscription from an expensive habit.

  1. Install and target one page. Use session targeting so your daily allowance is spent on the page that makes you money, not the blog.
  2. Check your traffic coverage. Open the coverage widget. If it reads 12%, treat every heatmap as a hint, not a verdict.
  3. Launch one survey. One question, on exit or the thank-you page. “What almost stopped you enquiring today?” is our highest-yield question.
  4. Read the answers before the recordings. Answers point you at a page; recordings show you the moment it breaks.
  5. Watch five sessions, no more. Filter to visitors who hit the page and left. Cap yourself at 30 minutes.
  6. Ship one fix. One change at a time, or you never learn which one worked.
  7. Measure 30 days later. Compare enquiry rate against the month before. Keep the tool only if the number moved.
Key takeaway: One page, one question, one fix, one measurement. Anything more elaborate in month one and the tool becomes a hobby.

11. Our Verdict: Are Website Heatmaps Worth It in 2026?

Quick Answer: Heatmaps: yes, always, and get them free. Hotjar specifically: only if you will use the surveys. This Hotjar review rates the tool highly and still tells most Malaysian SMEs to start free, because the paid features only pay off for a team that acts on them.

Hotjar is not competing with Clarity any more. It is competing with the question “will we ever actually ask our visitors anything?”

Buy it if you have real traffic, someone who owns the website, and a question you cannot answer from a heatmap. Skip it if you have low traffic, no owner, or a team that already ignores the reports GA4 gives them for free. A dormant subscription is the most expensive tool in any stack — the same trap as buying a full Semrush licence and logging in twice a year.

We are a Google Partner agency running campaigns for 500+ Malaysian clients, and our position is consistent: the tool is fine, the discipline is the hard part. Seeing friction is cheap. Removing it is a web design job, and that is where the conversion comes from. Fix the fundamentals first — a mobile-friendly layout and sound UI/UX design — before you pay to study the problem.

Key takeaway: Worth it for teams that ask questions and ship fixes. Not worth it for teams that will watch recordings and change nothing.

12. Conclusion

Quick Answer: This Hotjar review ends where the money does. Heatmaps are worth having and now cost nothing. Hotjar earns a subscription only through its surveys — so pay for it if you will ask your visitors questions, and install a free tool if you will not.

Hotjar built a category, then watched Microsoft give it away. What survives is the better half of the product: asking a real person, mid-visit, what is missing from the page. Those answers have moved our clients’ enquiry rates more than any layout tweak. So the verdict rests on a question only you can answer — will anyone in your business act on what a visitor tells you?

13. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Hotjar still free in 2026?

There is still a free plan, but it is capped by daily sessions. Once your site passes the cap, Hotjar samples your traffic and you only see a portion of your visitors. Since the Contentsquare merger, plans are named Free, Growth, Pro and Enterprise, so check the live pricing page before signing up.

2. Is Hotjar better than Microsoft Clarity?

Only for surveys and feedback. Clarity gives you heatmaps and recordings free with no traffic cap, which covers what most Malaysian SMEs need. Hotjar wins when you want to ask visitors questions on the page, or need data history longer than Clarity’s 30-day window.

3. What happened to Hotjar after the Contentsquare merger?

Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare Group on 1 July 2025. Heatmaps, recordings and surveys still work, but they now sit inside the Contentsquare platform, plan names have changed, and billing moved across. The product is steering towards larger teams.

4. Why does Hotjar not record all my visitors?

Sampling. Every plan has a daily session capture limit; when your traffic exceeds it, Hotjar records an even slice across the day rather than everything. Check the traffic coverage widget — it shows what percentage of your visitors you are actually seeing.

5. Do heatmaps actually increase conversions?

Heatmaps do not increase anything by themselves. The fixes they prompt do. In our client work, moving a call-to-action above the scroll drop-off point and shortening forms lifted enquiry rates — but the biggest gains came from surveys that told us what information was missing.
