Most owners find out they are not eligible the slow way, after picking a supplier and gathering documents. The rules are short, and the checker puts them in front of you before you spend a ringgit. It is built on the conditions BSN publishes for the grant, which we also explain in our guide to the SME digital grant for marketing.
This short news report shows how widely the grant is already used.

1. How do you use the SME digital grant eligibility checker?
Quick Answer: Answer seven questions about your business: ownership, registration, time trading, turnover, any earlier grant, what you want funded and the project cost. The result updates as you click, showing your eligibility, each gate's status, the grant amount and the share you pay yourself.
Have your SSM details and last year's sales figures nearby. The whole check takes about two minutes.
- Confirm ownership. At least 60% must be held by Malaysian citizens.
- Pick your registration. SSM, a local authority (PBT) or a cooperative (SKM).
- Check your trading time. Six months or more.
- Choose your turnover band. The bar is an average of RM50,000 a year.
- Declare any earlier claim. A previous digitalisation matching grant usually rules out a new one.
- Pick what you want funded. Website, online store, SEO, ads setup, social media or e-invoicing.
- Enter the project cost. Use your Digitalisation Partner's full quotation.
Key takeaway: Five questions decide eligibility and two decide the amount. Answer the turnover question from your filed figures, not from your best month.

Quick Answer: “Likely eligible” means you pass all five gates. “Check one thing first” means your turnover is unconfirmed. “Not eligible yet” names the gate you miss. The grant figure is 50% of your project cost, capped at RM5,000, and the final decision always sits with BSN and MDEC.
The grant pays half of your project until the cost reaches RM10,000. Above that, the RM5,000 ceiling applies and you pay the rest. These worked examples come from our guide to the SME digital grant for websites.
| Project cost (RM) | Grant covers (RM) | You pay (RM) |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 | 1,500 | 1,500 |
| 6,000 | 3,000 | 3,000 |
| 10,000 | 5,000 | 5,000 |
| 16,000 | 5,000 | 11,000 |
| 30,000 | 5,000 | 25,000 |

When the SME digital grant eligibility checker says you miss a gate, the warning under the result names it. Newer or very small businesses most often fall short on turnover. A business that already claimed before can usually only make a new claim for e-invoicing, which our e-invoice guide for small businesses covers.
Key takeaway: Size the project near RM10,000 to claim the full RM5,000. Below that, the grant is simply half of a smaller bill.
3. What should you do before applying for the grant?
Quick Answer: Choose an approved Digitalisation Partner, get a scoped quotation, and prepare your SSM profile, the owner’s NRIC and recent bank statements. Never pay before approval. Approval usually takes a few working days, and you then have 14 days to pay your half before work starts.
Most rejections come from a few avoidable slips. Clear these before you submit.
- Use an approved supplier. Only a listed Digitalisation Partner with a proper quotation and tax invoice qualifies, not a cash-paid freelancer or a DIY builder.
- Match your documents. Your SSM name, bank account and application details must line up.
- Pay only after approval. Paying upfront can disqualify the whole claim.
- Apply early. Each year’s pool is finite and first-come, first-served. In 2024 the grant digitalised 38,804 MSMEs with about RM89.6 million, The Star reported.
Before you pick a supplier, run through our questions on how to choose a web design company in Malaysia.
Key takeaway: The grant comes off your partner’s invoice, never into your account. An approved partner, clean documents and payment after approval keep the claim safe.
4. Conclusion: check first, then scope the project
Quick Answer: Run the SME digital grant eligibility checker before you talk to any supplier. If you pass all five gates, size a project near RM10,000, pick an approved partner and apply early. If a gate stops you, fix that one thing first.
The grant is a 50% matching subsidy, not a loan. It changes what your website, SEO or ads cost you, not what they deliver. Set your overall spend first with our guide to the marketing budget for SMEs, then let ZenWeb help you shape a grant-ready package.
Passed the check? Put the RM5,000 to work.
We will check your eligibility with you, scope a website, SEO and ads package that makes the most of the grant, and walk you through the paperwork.
