Most Malaysian SME websites get one heatmap installed, one look at the pretty red blobs, and then nothing. The tool was never the problem. Nobody decided what question the heatmap was supposed to answer.
A heatmap is a diagnostic, not a dashboard. It earns its keep when you can name the page it watches and the decision it will settle: the CTA nobody taps, the form field everyone abandons, the section nobody scrolls to.
We build and optimise websites for Malaysian SMEs at ZenWeb, so this comparison is written from the install side — what these tools cost, what they show, and what actually changed on the page afterwards.
A heatmap tells you where visitors stop. It will not rebuild the page.

Here is a quick side-by-side of the two tools nearly every shortlist starts with.

Quick Answer: Heatmaps matter here because Malaysian traffic is overwhelmingly mobile, and mobile is where good desktop layouts quietly fall apart. Your enquiry button ends up below three scrolls of hero image, and no traffic report will tell you that. A heatmap shows it in one screen.
Malaysia is close to fully online — DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Malaysia report puts internet penetration at 98%, with 35.4 million users. Almost all of them reach your site on a phone.
That changes what a heatmap is for. It is the cheapest way to see your page as visitors actually experience it on mobile, which is rarely how it looked in the design mockup. If the basics are still broken, start with our guide on whether your website is mobile-friendly.
Quick Answer: Heatmaps show where people click, how far they scroll, where they hover, and where they rage-click. They cannot tell you why, and they cannot tell you whether a change made you money. For the why, watch a session recording; for the money, look at conversions.
Every tool in this review builds its maps from the same four ingredients:
What they cannot do is close the loop. A heatmap showing that nobody reaches your enquiry form is a finding, not a fix — turning it into leads is page-craft, which is the job our guide to conversion rate optimisation for Malaysian websites covers. Most teams also deploy these scripts through a tag container rather than editing theme files, as our Google Tag Manager review explains.
Quick Answer: Clarity is free forever with no traffic cap, gives click and scroll heatmaps plus unlimited session recordings, and now adds AI summaries on top. For a Malaysian SME with fewer than 50,000 monthly visits, there is no honest argument for paying anyone else first.
Microsoft Clarity is free, GDPR- and CCPA-ready, and now runs on more than two million sites and apps. Nothing is gated behind a paid tier, because there is no paid tier.
The 2026 change is the AI layer. Clarity now summarises a heatmap in plain language, answers questions about your own data, and reports which AI engines crawl and cite your pages — useful when AI answers are eating clicks, as our data on AI Overviews and click-through rates shows.
The trade-offs are narrow but real: no A/B testing, no serious form analytics, and your visitor data lives with Microsoft. Our full Microsoft Clarity review goes deeper on all three.
Quick Answer: Hotjar still has the friendliest heatmap interface in the category, and its free plan covers 35 sessions a day. But Hotjar is now a Contentsquare product — the pricing page redirects there — so you are buying into an enterprise platform’s roadmap, not a scrappy SME tool.
Hotjar’s own heatmaps page now opens with “Hotjar Heatmaps are now part of Contentsquare”, adds attention maps and side-by-side comparison, and keeps unlimited heatmaps on every plan. Paid tiers are quoted through Contentsquare and priced by daily sessions, so a busy site climbs the ladder fast.
Our full Hotjar review covers the plan structure in detail.
Quick Answer: Crazy Egg pairs heatmaps with built-in A/B testing, so you can act on a finding inside the same tool. Mouseflow scores every session for friction and has the deepest form analytics. Both are worth paying for only when a specific page is worth real money.
Crazy Egg starts at US$29 a month on the Starter plan, billed annually, per Crazy Egg’s pricing page. That buys 5,000 tracked pageviews, five heatmap reports and 50 recordings a month. You choose it for the A/B testing bundled into paid tiers: heatmap, hypothesis and test without a second subscription.
Mouseflow starts at US$25 a month for 5,000 sessions, with a free 500-session tier, per Mouseflow’s pricing page. It offers six heatmap types and automatic friction detection. The catch is that form analytics, arguably its best feature, only unlocks on the Premium tier at US$319 a month.
Both bill annually in US dollars, so budget for the exchange rate, not just the sticker.
Quick Answer: The realistic SME range is US$0 to about US$30 a month. Clarity is free with no cap. Mouseflow’s entry plan is US$25 and Crazy Egg’s is US$29, both billed annually. Everything above that tier is priced for traffic volumes most Malaysian SMEs do not have.
Entry pricing, from each vendor’s own page, July 2026.
| Tool | Free tier | Entry paid plan | What the entry plan buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Everything, no traffic cap | None — free forever | Heatmaps, recordings, AI summaries |
| Mouseflow | 500 sessions/month | US$25/mo (Essential) | 5,000 sessions, friction detection, 1 funnel |
| Crazy Egg | Instant heatmaps only | US$29/mo (Starter) | 5,000 pageviews, 5 heatmap reports, 50 recordings |
| Hotjar (Contentsquare) | 35 sessions/day | Quoted via Contentsquare | Unlimited heatmaps, recordings, surveys |

Quick Answer: Across ZenWeb-managed Malaysian SME sites, the heatmap fix that pays best is moving the primary call to action above the mobile fold. Trimming form fields and adding a sticky WhatsApp button follow. Killing the hero carousel changes almost nothing — it just stops wasting your time.
Not every finding is worth acting on. Enquiries, measured over the 90 days either side of each fix:
| Fix made after the heatmap | Median change in enquiries |
|---|---|
| Primary CTA moved above the mobile fold | +21% |
| Form cut from seven fields to four | +17% |
| Sticky WhatsApp button added | +14% |
| Proof and reviews moved above the scroll drop-off | +9% |
| Dead-click element made clickable or removed | +6% |
| Hero carousel replaced with a static banner | +4% |

Placement beats polish. Nearly every winning fix moved something the visitor already wanted closer to where they already were — the same lesson as our guide to landing pages that convert.

Quick Answer: On Malaysian SME sites, the median mobile visitor stops around 42% of the way down a homepage — well before most businesses place their enquiry form. Desktop visitors go substantially further. Since roughly three in four sessions are mobile, the mobile number is the one that governs your layout.
Median scroll depth by page type, with the mobile share of sessions alongside.
| Page type | Mobile scroll depth | Desktop scroll depth | Mobile share of sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homepage | 42% | 61% | 78% |
| Service page | 55% | 68% | 74% |
| Pricing page | 71% | 79% | 69% |
| Blog post | 38% | 47% | 81% |
| Contact page | 88% | 91% | 76% |

Anything placed past the halfway mark of a mobile homepage is effectively unpublished. Contact pages get read almost in full, so a long contact page is fine while a long homepage is not.
Quick Answer: A scroll map settles down after roughly 300 sessions on the page. A click map needs closer to 1,000 before you should trust a pattern. Below about 500 site visits a month, expect to wait two months before reading anything into the colours.
Nobody asks this before installing, which is why so many SME heatmaps get abandoned in week two — there was nothing on them yet.
| Monthly site visits | Days to a readable scroll map (300) | Days to a readable click map (1,000) |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | 90 days | 300 days |
| 2,000 | 23 days | 75 days |
| 5,000 | 9 days | 30 days |
| 20,000 | 2 days | 8 days |
Modelled projection based on ZenWeb install data, assuming the tracked page receives 20% of site visits. Illustrative, not a measured result.
If your site sits in the top row of that table, a heatmap is not your next move — traffic is. Start with our on-page SEO checklist and the keyword research covered in our Semrush review.
Quick Answer: Heatmaps themselves are aggregate and low-risk. Session recordings are the exposure — they can capture what a visitor types. Every serious tool masks input fields by default, but you should verify it on your own forms rather than assume it.
Malaysia’s amended Personal Data Protection Act phased in through 2025, bringing breach notification duties and a named data protection officer. Once a business has a DPO, someone eventually asks what that recording script captures.
Three checks before you switch recordings on:
Quick Answer: Pick one page, install Clarity, wait for 1,000 sessions, then change exactly one thing and measure enquiries for 30 days. One page, one change, one metric — that discipline separates a useful heatmap from an expensive screensaver.
Then repeat on the next page. The compounding comes from the loop, not the tool.
Quick Answer: Install Microsoft Clarity today. Add Crazy Egg when you want to test what the heatmap suggested, or Mouseflow when a form is losing you money. Choose Hotjar when surveys matter as much as maps. There is no scenario where an SME should start by paying.
The best heatmap tool is the one that leads to a page change within a month of installing it.
Ranked by the job you are hiring it for:
None of them will rewrite your hero section or move your CTA. That is a build job, and it is ours: as a Google Partner agency working with 500+ Malaysian businesses, we treat the heatmap as the brief, not the deliverable. If your site is slow as well as leaky, start by fixing your loading speed, then read the maps again.
Microsoft Clarity is the best starting point: free, no traffic cap, session recordings included. Crazy Egg suits businesses that want A/B testing bundled in, Mouseflow suits form-heavy sites, and Hotjar suits teams that also want surveys. Most Malaysian SMEs never need to pay.
It is genuinely free, with no traffic limits and no paid upgrade path. The trade is that your visitor behaviour data sits with Microsoft, and there is no A/B testing or deep form analytics. For most small businesses that is an easy trade.
Every heatmap script adds weight, and session recording adds more than heatmaps alone. Load the script asynchronously, sample recordings instead of capturing every session, and check your Core Web Vitals before and after installing.
Yes. Heatmaps show aggregate behaviour and carry little risk. Session recordings need the care, because they can capture typed input: mask all form fields, exclude payment and login pages, and name the tool in your privacy policy. Confirm your setup with your data protection officer.
Roughly 300 sessions on the page for a trustworthy scroll map, and around 1,000 for a click map. Below about 2,000 site visits a month, install a free tool and let it collect for a quarter instead of reading patterns into a handful of clicks.
Your heatmap found the leak. Now fix the page.
