GA4 Review: Is Google Analytics 4 Worth Learning?
TL;DR: Yes, but only about six hours of it. This GA4 review finds the reports Malaysian SME owners act on — traffic acquisition, key events, landing pages — can be learned in an afternoon, while explorations and custom dimensions rarely repay the time. The real problem is not the learning curve. It is that most GA4 properties were never configured to record a lead at all.

1. Introduction

Ask a Malaysian business owner what they think of Google Analytics 4 and you get one of two answers. Either “I never open it,” or “I open it, I don’t understand it, I close it.”

Both are fair. GA4 was not built for the person who owns the business. It was built for the person who runs the measurement stack, and it assumes you already know what an event is and why the number on screen refuses to match your Google Ads account.

So the question in this GA4 review is not “is GA4 good software?” It is narrower and more useful: is it worth your hours? At ZenWeb we sit inside hundreds of Malaysian SME analytics accounts, and the answer depends on which parts you plan to learn — and whether anyone configured the property before handing you the login.

Before the verdict, here is a walkthrough of the interface as it stands in 2026.

2. What Actually Changed When Universal Analytics Died?

Quick Answer: Universal Analytics stopped processing new data on 1 July 2023. GA4 replaced it with an event-based model: every click, scroll and form submit is an event, and nothing counts as a lead until you say so. That change is why so many Malaysian SME properties record traffic but no conversions.

Google confirmed the cut-off itself — standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing new data from 1 July 2023. Most Malaysian SMEs never migrated. Google auto-created a GA4 property, dropped the tag in, and that was that — an account that technically works and practically tells you nothing.

  • Sessions became events. GA4 counts interactions, not visits. One visitor generates dozens of events, which is why the numbers look inflated compared to what you remember.
  • Goals became key events. A form submission is only a conversion if you mark it as one. Out of the box, GA4 marks nothing.
  • Reports got fewer, explorations got harder. The old menu was long and shallow. GA4’s is short and deep — better for analysts, worse for owners.

Zeros in the conversions column are not a GA4 flaw. They are a setup gap, and it is fixable in an hour. Our guide on why GA4 stops recording conversions walks through the usual culprits.

Key takeaway: GA4 changed what counts as a result. Until someone marks your enquiry form as a key event, it stays a sophisticated visitor counter.

3. Which GA4 Reports Do Malaysian SMEs Actually Open?

Quick Answer: Nearly every SME opens the home snapshot, and almost nobody acts on it. The reports that change decisions — key events, landing pages, explorations — are the ones most owners never touch. Report popularity and report usefulness are close to inverted in GA4.

For this GA4 review we tracked which reports Malaysian SME clients open in a typical month, then checked which visits led to an actual change: a budget shift, a page rewrite, a campaign pause. The pattern is uncomfortable.

The most-opened report in GA4 changes the fewest decisions. The least-opened one changes the most.

The snapshot is a wall of pretty lines: traffic rose, which is interesting and unactionable. The landing page report says one service page pulls most of your organic visitors and converts none — that is a decision. Our post on reading a marketing dashboard as a non-marketer pairs well here.

Key takeaway: Learn the reports at the bottom of that table, not the one at the top. Key events, landing pages and one funnel exploration carry almost all of GA4’s practical value.

4. What GA4 Gets Right, and Where It Frustrates

Quick Answer: GA4 is free, links natively to Google Ads and Search Console, and tracks a customer across devices. It also caps free data at 14 months, hides low-volume segments, and never quite matches your ad platforms. Both lists are real; neither is a dealbreaker.

What genuinely works:

  • The price. A tool this capable costing nothing is unusual. Paid alternatives sell you a friendlier interface, not more data.
  • Native Google Ads linking. Conversions flow into Ads for bidding — worth more than any report in the interface. See our Google Ads conversion tracking setup guide.
  • Cross-device tracking. A buyer who browses on mobile at lunch and enquires on desktop at night is one user, not two.

What genuinely frustrates:

  • The data ceiling. Free properties retain user and event data for a maximum of 14 months, per Google’s data retention settings, and many are still on the shorter two-month option. Standard reports survive; explorations and funnels do not.
  • Thresholding. Low-volume segments get hidden for privacy, which hits small Malaysian sites hardest. The workaround is in our fix for sampled and thresholded GA4 reports.
  • The numbers never match. GA4 disagrees with Google Ads and Search Console permanently, by design. Both gaps have honest explanations — GA4 versus Google Ads and Search Console versus GA4 — but owners lose days to them.
  • The curve is front-loaded. Nothing useful appears until setup is done, so the first hour feels like the tool is broken.
Key takeaway: GA4’s frustrations are friction, not failure. The one that costs real money is the retention ceiling — export anything you want to keep past 14 months.

5. How Long Does GA4 Actually Take to Learn?

Quick Answer: About six hours gets a business owner to useful. That covers date ranges, traffic acquisition, key events and the Google Ads link. Explorations, custom dimensions and event debugging take another 20-plus hours and belong to whoever runs your marketing, not to you.

Across our onboarding sessions with Malaysian SME owners and marketers, time-to-competence is consistent — and so is the payoff gap between the first six hours and the next twenty.

The top four rows add up to six hours — the whole owner-level curriculum. Everything below is a marketer’s job, and paying someone for those twenty hours costs less than spending your own, which is the same logic behind choosing which marketing KPIs to track in GA4.

Key takeaway: Six hours buys most of GA4’s business value. Treating the next twenty as compulsory is why owners quit before the tool pays off.

6. Which Questions Can GA4 Answer, and Which Can’t It?

Quick Answer: GA4 owns on-site behaviour: which channel brought the visitor, which page lost them, which action they took. It cannot tell you which Google query earned the click, which enquiry became a customer, or whether your page is indexed. Those belong to Search Console, Google Ads and your CRM.

Most GA4 disappointment comes from asking it a question it was never built to answer, so this GA4 review draws the boundary plainly. The matrix below is what we hand new clients on day one.

Read the matrix and GA4 stops looking like a failure. It is strong exactly where the others are blind — on-site behaviour — and blind where they are strong. Pair it with the free Search Console reports most owners underuse and you have covered both halves of organic performance.

Key takeaway: GA4 is not a reporting suite. It is the on-site half of one, and it should be judged on that basis.

7. Are Malaysian SME GA4 Setups Getting Better?

Quick Answer: Slowly. Across the Malaysian SME accounts we audit, the share with a correctly configured key event has climbed from roughly one in five in 2022 to two-thirds in 2026. But a quarter still collect traffic and record no conversion at all.

The trend below tracks two numbers across the accounts we audit: properties where a lead action is correctly marked as a key event, and properties collecting data with none configured at all.

The gap between those two rows is where the arguments about GA4 come from. An owner with a configured property says the tool is fine. An owner in the red row says it is useless. Both are looking at the same software. If your account shows traffic but a flat zero in conversions, start with the fix for a GA4 property showing no data.

Key takeaway: GA4’s reputation in Malaysia is mostly a setup story, not a software story. Roughly a quarter of SME properties still record no conversion of any kind.

8. So Is GA4 Worth Learning? The Verdict by Role

Quick Answer: Business owners should learn six hours of GA4 and stop. In-house marketers should learn it properly, including explorations. E-commerce teams have no choice — GA4 is where revenue reconciles. Nobody should try to learn all of GA4 “because it is free”.

The honest verdict of this GA4 review is that “worth learning” is the wrong unit. Worth learning which parts, for whose job, is the question with a real answer.

  • Business owner or director. Learn the six-hour core: which channel brings enquiries, which page converts, whether last month beat the one before.
  • In-house marketer. Learn it properly. Explorations, audiences and the Ads link separate reporting on activity from reporting on money.
  • E-commerce operator. Non-negotiable. Purchase events, item revenue and refunds live here, and a broken setup misprices every campaign.
  • Service business closing offline. Learn the core, then spend the effort getting sales outcomes back into GA4.

One group we tell to skip GA4 almost entirely: very small local businesses whose enquiries all arrive by WhatsApp or phone. Click tracking on the WhatsApp button plus Search Console covers most of the useful signal.

Key takeaway: GA4 is worth learning in proportion to how much of your revenue is decided online. Match the depth of learning to the size of that number, not to the size of the software.

9. How Do You Set Up GA4 So It Is Worth Learning?

Quick Answer: Five steps turn a useless GA4 property into a useful one: confirm the tag fires, mark lead actions as key events, link Google Ads and Search Console, set retention to 14 months, and check consent settings. Budget one hour.

How to make a GA4 property useful in one hour

Do these in order. Skipping the second step is why so many Malaysian SME properties sit in the red row above.

  1. Confirm the tag is firing. Open Realtime, load your site on your phone, and watch yourself appear. If nothing appears, fix that first.
  2. Mark your lead actions as key events. Form submit, WhatsApp click, phone tap, quote request. In Admin, open Events and toggle “Mark as key event” on each.
  3. Link Google Ads and Search Console. Both sit in Admin under Product links. This is what lets campaigns bid on real conversions rather than clicks.
  4. Set data retention to 14 months. Admin, then Data settings, then Data retention. The shorter setting quietly destroys your year-on-year comparisons.
  5. Check your consent settings. With Malaysia’s PDPA obligations tightening, get this right early — our guide to consent mode and PDPA in GA4 covers the setup.

After that hour, GA4 answers questions instead of raising them. If events still refuse to appear, our GA4 events troubleshooting guide is the next stop.

Key takeaway: One hour of configuration decides whether the next six hours of learning pay off. Configure first, learn second — most owners do it backwards.

10. Where GA4 Ends and Other Tools Begin

Quick Answer: Nothing replaces GA4 for on-site behaviour at zero cost. Looker Studio makes its data readable, Search Console covers the query side, and a paid SEO suite covers competitors and rankings. They complement GA4 rather than compete with it.

Owners often ask whether a friendlier paid tool could replace GA4 outright. It cannot — but each alternative solves a piece of the problem:

  • Looker Studio for readability. The free dashboard layer that turns GA4 into something you will open on a Monday. Our Looker Studio review for marketers covers where it shines and stalls.
  • Search Console for the query side. The only source of the words Malaysians typed before they found you.
  • A paid SEO suite for competitors. GA4 is blind to everyone but you. Our Semrush review for Malaysian SMEs weighs whether that visibility earns its subscription.
  • AI-assisted analytics for speed. Good at summarising, weak at judgment — see AI SEO tools versus traditional tools.
  • Your CRM for the truth. Only the CRM knows which lead paid. Feeding that back closes the loop on calculating digital marketing ROI.

One 2026 wrinkle: a rising share of visits arrive from AI assistants rather than a classic search result, and GA4 does not label them. Our post on tracking AI search traffic in GA4 shows how to separate it.

Key takeaway: There is no GA4 replacement, only GA4 companions. Budget for the companions rather than hunting for an escape route.

11. Conclusion

Quick Answer: GA4 is worth learning in a limited, deliberate way. Six hours on the reports that drive decisions, one hour on configuration, and an acceptance that the rest belongs to specialists. Anything more is a hobby, not a business investment.

The verdict of this GA4 review is not that the tool is great or bad. It is that GA4 rewards a narrow, stubborn kind of learning — and punishes the broad, dutiful kind most owners attempt and abandon.

Learn the six hours. Fix the hour of setup. Then get back to running the business and let the numbers earn their keep by telling you whether your SEO investment is paying off.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is GA4 free for Malaysian businesses?

Yes. Standard Google Analytics 4 is free, with no limits an SME would realistically hit. The paid tier, Analytics 360, is for enterprises needing longer retention. Almost no Malaysian SME needs it.

2. How long does it take to learn GA4?

About six hours for the parts an owner needs: date ranges, traffic acquisition, key events and the Google Ads link. Explorations, custom dimensions and event debugging add roughly twenty more hours, and are better delegated.

3. Why does GA4 show different numbers from Google Ads?

They count differently. Google Ads credits a conversion to the day of the click; GA4 credits it to the day it happened, using its own attribution model. Across the accounts we manage, a modest gap is normal rather than a bug. Investigate only when it is large.

4. How long does GA4 keep my data?

Free properties retain user and event data for a maximum of 14 months, and many still run the shorter two-month setting. Standard reports are unaffected; explorations and funnels are not. Export anything you need beyond that window.

5. Do I still need Search Console if I have GA4?

Yes. GA4 cannot tell you which Google query brought a visitor, whether your page is indexed, or whether Google issued a manual action. Search Console answers all three, free. This GA4 review treats them as two halves of one picture.
