Best Google Ads for Automation Firms in Malaysia: Guide 2026
TL;DR: Google Ads for automation firms is a funding problem, not a traffic problem. Most people searching for automation have no approved capex behind the search, and the account cannot see the difference. Bid where money already exists and cost per site survey falls from about RM 1,420 to RM 396 across twenty weeks.

A system integrator in Bukit Mertajam spent RM 5,600 on search ads over six weeks and counted it a win: 63 enquiries at roughly RM 89 each. Then the engineering manager read them. Nineteen were about autogate and home lighting. Eleven were students. Fourteen wanted a quotation with no line and no budget.

Five enquiries reached a site survey. Two had approved funding. The account bought attention cheaply and buying power almost not at all.

This guide is for system integrators, machine builders, control panel and PLC houses, robotics and vision integrators, and warehouse automation suppliers.

ZenWeb is a Google Partner running Google Ads for 500+ Malaysian accounts, industrial clients included. In automation, the account’s job is not to find engineers. It is to find the few whose capex is signed off.

1. Why Google Ads for Automation Firms Is a Funding Problem

Quick Answer: Automation is bought against a capex cycle, not against a need. Plenty of engineers genuinely want a line automated and mean it — the money simply is not approved yet, and may not be for another financial year.

That changes what a good enquiry looks like. A supervisor with a real bottleneck and no budget is a buyer eighteen months early — and he still consumes a site visit.

  • The approval sits above the searcher. The person typing is a production or maintenance engineer. The person signing is a plant manager, a finance controller, or a regional HQ.
  • The unit of work is a survey, not a reply. Quoting a project means a site visit, a cycle-time study and a layout sketch — two engineer-days before any number exists.
  • Grants move the calendar. The Automation Capital Allowance and Industry4WRD funding often decide when a plant buys more than the bottleneck does.

So the account is judged on booked site surveys, not enquiries. Setting that threshold before you spend is the discipline in our guide to defining a qualified lead.

Key takeaway: Judge the account on booked site surveys. Cheap enquiries usually mean the campaign found engineers with no approved capex.

2. Which Automation Searches Are Worth Bidding On?

Quick Answer: Bid on queries carrying a plant noun, a platform brand or a funding word. A conveyor line, a FANUC cell, a SCADA migration or an Automation CA question all imply a real site and a budget conversation. The bare word “automation” implies neither.

Query shapeExampleBid it?
Funding and incentiveautomation capital allowance, Industry4WRD grantYes, highest priority
Platform brand plus integratorFANUC integrator Malaysia, Siemens TIA programmerYes, own ad group
Named capabilitymachine vision inspection, AMR warehouse, SCADA upgradeYes, one group each
Special purpose machinecustom assembly machine, automated packing machineYes, separate page
Retrofit and obsolescencePLC migration, obsolete drive replacementYes, fastest to close
Bare categoryautomation company, automasi kilangExact match only, low bid
Consumer and software crossoverhome automation, marketing automation, RPANo, block hard

Broad match is dangerous here. Google treats “automation” as one topic and will serve a factory ad against smart home, workflow software and test automation searches. Stay on phrase and exact until the search terms report settles, which is easier once you know how the match types behave.

Key takeaway: A query with no plant noun, no platform brand and no funding word rarely has approved money behind it.

3. How Should an Automation Google Ads Account Be Structured?

Quick Answer: Build campaigns around what the buyer is qualifying: funding, platform, capability, machine build and retrofit. Five campaigns, five landing pages, five budget ceilings. Manufacturing clusters belong in location settings, not in campaign names.

Most automation accounts are one campaign called “Industrial Automation” holding forty keywords and pointing at the home page. That hides which capability wins projects, and forces a vision enquiry and a conveyor enquiry onto one page.

  • Funding campaign. Automation CA, Industry4WRD, DISF and payback queries. Copy names the incentive and the eligibility step.
  • Platform campaign. One ad group per brand you are certified on — Siemens, Mitsubishi, Omron, ABB, FANUC, Universal Robots. State the certification, not “we do robots”.
  • Capability campaign. PLC and SCADA, machine vision, robotic pick and place, AMR and AS/RS, conveyor and material handling.
  • Machine build campaign. Special purpose machines, custom jigs and test rigs. Longer cycle, larger tickets, own page.
  • Retrofit campaign. Obsolescence, migration and breakdown searches. Smallest tickets, highest close rate.

Keep budgets at campaign level so the firm can throttle whichever team is loaded. If the account needs rebuilding, our walkthrough on organising Google Ads campaigns covers the mechanics.

Key takeaway: Structure by capability and funding, not geography. Your project engineers know which team is idle; the account should follow them.

4. The Negative Keyword List an Automation Firm Actually Needs

Quick Answer: An automation account needs two negative lists. One blocks the wrong meaning of the word — home automation, marketing automation, test automation. The other blocks the right industry at the wrong stage — training, tutorial, salary, project report.

No other Malaysian industrial category shares its main keyword with three unrelated markets. That is why this list belongs in the account before launch, not after.

Group to blockNegatives to add (English and Malay)
Consumer and buildinghome, smart home, autogate, pintu pagar, curtain, lighting, cctv
Software and officemarketing, workflow, rpa, whatsapp, email, test automation, selenium
Students and trainingkursus, course, training, tutorial, pdf, syllabus, final year project
Jobs and recruitmentvacancy, jawatan kosong, gaji, salary, internship, resume, hiring
Component and part buyersharga, price list, spare part, second hand, sensor only, distributor
Grant consultants and agentsconsultant, apply grant, geran, application form, eligibility checker

Build both as account-level lists so every campaign inherits them. Note that Google’s negative keywords do not match close variants — singular and plural each need adding. Then read the search terms report weekly for three months, following our guide to negative keywords.

Key takeaway: “Automation” belongs to four industries at once. Blocking the other three is the first day’s work, not month three’s.

5. What a Plant Engineer Needs on the Landing Page

Quick Answer: The page must answer two questions above the fold: has this integrator done my process before, and what does a project like mine cost. Publish the platform list, the safety standards, a project size band and a payback example, then accept a layout drawing.

Naming a project size band feels like losing enquiries. It is the cheapest filter an integrator owns, and it works before anyone gets in a car.

  • Platform and certification list. Which PLC, HMI, drive, robot and vision brands you are certified on, by name and level.
  • Reference processes, not logos. “End-of-line palletising for an FMCG plant in Shah Alam” beats twenty client badges.
  • Safety in plain text. Machine guarding, risk assessment and the DOSH requirements a plant must satisfy before commissioning.
  • A stated project band. “We take projects from RM 80,000” removes most unqualified enquiries at no cost.
  • Payback maths. Headcount displaced, cycle time saved, months to payback. Finance reads this page too.
  • File upload plus WhatsApp. Malaysian engineers often send a photo of the line before any form.

Each campaign needs its own page. Sending a machine vision click to a general capability page is the most expensive leak in these accounts, and the fixes overlap with our advice on Google Ads landing pages.

Key takeaway: Publishing a project size band filters better than any negative keyword, because it works on the buyer rather than the query.

6. Bidding on Grant and Incentive Searches

Quick Answer: A plant searching for the Automation Capital Allowance is telling you it has capex intent and a deadline. These queries are cheaper than platform keywords, convert better, and almost nobody in Malaysian automation bids on them properly.

The incentive landscape is the strongest buying signal this industry produces, and all of it is public.

  • Automation Capital Allowance. MIDA grants a 200 per cent capital allowance on qualifying automation equipment up to RM 10 million, with applications open until 31 December 2027. Guidelines sit on MIDA’s Automation CA page.
  • Technical verification. Approval requires a site verification of the machine by SIRIM, handled through SIRIM’s Automation CA registration.
  • Industry4WRD Intervention Fund. A 70:30 matching grant capped at RM 500,000 for eligible SMEs, with a separate 60:40 DISF track, both on MIDA’s Industry4WRD page.

Write the ad to the deadline and the eligibility step, not to your capability. A page explaining what qualifies, what SIRIM verifies and how long approval takes will out-convert a capability page — the same logic behind targeting buyers instead of browsers.

Key takeaway: Grant searches are the only automation queries where the buyer has already admitted it is spending. Bid them first.

7. How Much Should a Malaysian Automation Firm Spend?

Quick Answer: Size the budget against survey capacity. A settled automation account books a site survey for roughly RM 400 to RM 500. A team that can run six extra surveys a month needs about RM 2,400 to RM 3,000 in media, plus a heavier first two months.

Automation is one of the few trades where too many enquiries hurt. Every unqualified site visit costs an engineer a day owed to a job already sold.

  • Work backwards from survey capacity. Surveys you can absorb multiplied by cost per survey is the budget. Percentage-of-revenue rules tell you nothing.
  • Budget for a longer learning period. The first eight weeks run at two to three times the eventual cost per survey while both negative lists build.
  • Hold a reserve for grant season. Enquiry quality lifts when plants work to an incentive deadline, and you want headroom then.

Industrial categories sit above the Malaysian average on cost per click, and automation sits near the top because it competes with software advertisers for the same word. Our breakdown of what Google Ads costs in Malaysia gives the context.

Key takeaway: Set the budget by how many site surveys your engineers can run, not by what the company can afford.

8. What Does an Automation Click Cost in Malaysia?

Quick Answer: Home and smart automation crossover searches produce the cheapest clicks in the account at RM 2.90 — and a qualified enquiry from them costs RM 690. Grant and incentive queries cost RM 9.60 a click and RM 118 per qualified enquiry.

Read the top row carefully. It has the lowest cost per click and the second-highest click-to-enquiry rate, which is why integrators let it run. Cost per click alone never exposes the problem, as our CPC by industry breakdown shows in other categories too.

Key takeaway: The cheapest click in an automation account costs RM 2.90 and is almost never a factory. Judge clusters on qualified enquiry cost.

9. Which Funding Stages Actually Turn Into Projects?

Quick Answer: Enquiries with no budget make up 38 per cent of automation enquiries and win 2 per cent of the time. Enquiries where a grant or Automation CA is already approved are 11 per cent of volume and win 34 per cent, at six times the project value.

Integrators underrate the urgent row. Breakdown work carries the smallest ticket and the highest award rate, because there is no competitive shortlist — the same logic as lead scoring. Ask for funding stage on the form and rebuild the account around the answer.

Key takeaway: Nearly four in ten automation enquiries have no budget at all. One form field separates them from the projects.

10. Which Campaign Type Wins Automation Projects?

Quick Answer: Grant and incentive search costs RM 189 of media per RM 100,000 of awarded project value. Performance Max optimised on form fills costs RM 7,882 for the same RM 100,000, because it finds the searchers most willing to fill in a form.

Performance Max is not broken here, only obedient. Told to maximise form fills, it goes where forms get filled: students, job seekers and home automation shoppers. The same trap follows any shallow bidding goal, as our comparison of manual CPC and smart bidding sets out.

Key takeaway: Automated campaigns optimise toward whatever you count. Count form fills in automation and you buy students at scale.

11. What Do the First Five Months Look Like?

Quick Answer: An automation account needs about twenty weeks. Unqualified enquiries fall from 78 per cent to 19 per cent, booked site surveys rise from 1 to 8 a month, and cost per site survey drops from roughly RM 1,420 to RM 396.

Most of the first eight weeks goes on the meaning filter, not the funding one. Rising click-through rate is a by-product: as home automation and software impressions disappear, the audience left wanted the ad, which lifts Quality Score and pulls the cost per click down.

Key takeaway: Give the account five months. Judging it at week six means judging the filtering phase, not the campaign.

12. Tracking Site Surveys, WhatsApp and Project Awards

Quick Answer: Counting form submissions teaches an automation account to buy students. Feed the booked site survey and the eventual project award back into Google Ads so bidding optimises toward funded plants rather than fast typists.

An automation sales cycle runs three to twelve months. Nothing decisive happens at the front, so nothing there should be the optimisation target.

  • Track three distinct actions. Drawing or photo upload, WhatsApp click and phone call, each its own conversion action with its own value.
  • Make the survey the conversion. When an engineer confirms a site visit and logs the funding stage, that record is the real conversion.
  • Send the award value back. Google’s offline conversion imports and enhanced conversions for leads let you upload the award months after the click.

The plumbing is where most automation accounts stall. Our walkthroughs on conversion tracking with GA4 and WhatsApp and offline lead conversion cover both halves.

Key takeaway: Make the booked site survey the conversion. It is the first moment money and intent are both confirmed.

13. Common Google Ads Mistakes Automation Firms Make

Quick Answer: Five errors recur: broad match on the word “automation”, hiding the project size band, one page for every capability, optimising on form fills, and switching the account off between projects. The last resets learning that took five months to build.

  • Broad match on “automation”. No other Malaysian keyword leaks across four industries this badly. Phrase and exact until the search terms report is clean.
  • Hiding the project size band. The firm fears losing enquiries and instead loses engineer days to plants that were never going to fund anything.
  • One landing page for six capabilities. A vision buyer cannot find your inspection references, so they enquire with the integrator who published theirs.
  • Optimising on form fills. Bidding drifts toward the easiest enquiries, and Performance Max drifts fastest.
  • Pausing between projects. Learning resets and the account restarts at week-one cost per survey — the reason we argue against pausing Google Ads during slow months.

All five share one root cause: measuring the enquiry instead of the project. If Google Ads for automation firms produces clicks and no surveys worth driving to, start with the search terms report, not the bids — the same diagnosis as our piece on clicks that never turn into sales.

Key takeaway: Lower the budget between projects, never pause it. Five months of learning beats five weeks of saved spend.

14. Conclusion

Google Ads suits Malaysian automation firms, but only when the account is built around funding. There is no shortage of engineers who want a line automated. There is a shortage of plants with approved capex, and separating the two is the whole job.

Block the other three meanings of “automation” before launch. Publish your platform list and project size band. Bid grant queries first and make the booked survey the conversion. ZenWeb’s Google Ads management follows that order for industrial accounts, and the same logic shapes our approach to SEO for automation firms.

15. Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much should an industrial automation firm spend on Google Ads in Malaysia?

Size it against survey capacity. A settled account books a site survey for about RM 396 to RM 500, so a firm that can run six extra surveys a month needs roughly RM 2,400 to RM 3,000 in media, plus a heavier first two months.

2. Why do my automation ads bring home automation and student enquiries?

Because the keyword is shared. Home and smart automation clicks cost only RM 2.90 and convert to enquiry at 8.1 per cent, so any broad match setting finds them first. A qualified enquiry from that cluster costs RM 690.

3. Should an automation firm bid on grant and incentive keywords?

Yes, and first. Those queries deliver a qualified enquiry for RM 118 and win 31 per cent of the surveys they produce. A plant asking about the Automation Capital Allowance has already decided it is spending.

4. Is Performance Max worth running for an automation integrator?

Only after project award value is imported. Optimised on form fills it costs about RM 7,882 of media per RM 100,000 awarded, against RM 189 for grant search. Start with search campaigns.

5. How long before Google Ads produces site surveys for an automation firm?

About twenty weeks. Booked surveys rise from around 1 a month to 8 by week twenty, while cost per site survey falls from roughly RM 1,420 to RM 396 as the funding filter tightens.
