Gemini Search Results: How to Show Up in Google's AI
TL;DR: Gemini search results are not one surface. The Gemini app, AI Mode and AI Overviews all draw on the same Google Search index. A page qualifies only if it is indexed, allowed to show a snippet, and not excluded in Search Console. Clear those gates first, then write passages worth quoting.

1. Introduction

Most advice on Gemini search results skips the boring part. It jumps straight to schema, llms.txt files and “AI-friendly formatting”, and never asks whether the page was eligible to appear at all.

That order is backwards for most Malaysian SMEs. In audits, the pages that never surface are usually blocked, unindexed, snippet-restricted or invisible without JavaScript. No rewriting fixes a page Google cannot serve.

This guide takes the gates first: what the phrase actually refers to, what must be true before a page qualifies, which popular tactics Google has ruled out, and how to check whether you appear today. For the wider service context, see our SEO services or the ZenWeb home page. The video below is a useful primer before the detail.

2. What “Gemini Search Results” Actually Means

Quick Answer: Three separate surfaces get called Gemini search results: answers inside the Gemini app, AI Mode inside Google Search, and AI Overviews above the blue links. All three pull pages from the same Google Search index, so one fix can move all three at once.

The phrase gets used loosely, which is why the advice around it contradicts itself. Separate the surfaces and the work becomes obvious:

  • The Gemini app. A chat interface that reaches for live web sources when the question needs them, then attaches citations to specific sentences.
  • AI Mode in Google Search. A conversational tab inside Search itself, covered in our explainer on what Google AI Mode means for your SEO.
  • AI Overviews. The summary block above the organic results, and the surface most Malaysian businesses meet first. See our guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews.

The mechanism underneath is public. Google’s Gemini API documentation describes grounding with Google Search, where the model writes its own search queries and attaches inline citations to specific text spans. That is the same behaviour users see in the app.

Two consequences follow. Your page competes as a retrieved source, not a ranked listing. And the citation attaches to a sentence, so that sentence matters more than the word count around it. Other engines work differently, which is why getting into Microsoft Copilot’s answers is a separate job.

Key takeaway: Treat Gemini search results as three views of one index. Work that makes a page retrievable and quotable feeds all three surfaces; work aimed at only one of them usually feeds none.

3. The Eligibility Gates You Must Clear First

Quick Answer: A page qualifies for Google’s generative AI features only if it is indexed, eligible to be shown with a snippet, and the site is included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Fail any one of the three and no content work can put you into Gemini search results.

Google states this plainly in its guide to optimizing for generative AI features. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console. Check each before touching the copy:

  • Indexing. Use the URL Inspection tool. A page excluded from the index cannot be retrieved, cited, or summarised — the question ends there.
  • Snippet eligibility. A nosnippet tag, a tight max-snippet limit, or a blanket noindex left over from a staging site quietly removes the page.
  • Crawl access. Blocked assets, JavaScript-only content and login walls all reduce what Google can read. Deciding which AI crawlers to allow through is a related but separate call.
  • Search Console inclusion. A site can be excluded from generative AI features. Confirm the setting rather than assuming it.

None of this is glamorous, and none of it is optional. It is also the cheapest work in the programme — a day or two, against months for content. That is why our 90-day AI search roadmap puts it in the first fortnight.

Key takeaway: Eligibility is binary and cheap to fix. Audit indexing, snippets, crawl access and Search Console inclusion before you spend a ringgit on content written for Gemini search results.

4. How Much Overlap Is There Between the Three Surfaces?

Quick Answer: Across tracked Malaysian prompts, roughly half of cited sources appear on all three surfaces for the same question. Overlap is highest on definition and how-to questions and lowest on local shortlists, where the Gemini app pulls sources the other two surfaces skip.

This tells you how far one fix travels. High overlap means a page cited in one place tends to be cited in the others — the pattern behind most AI search ranking factors that survive testing.

Prompt typeCited on all threeCited on twoSingle surface only
Definition (“what is…”)64%24%12%
How-to and process59%27%14%
Comparison (“X vs Y”)51%31%18%

Local shortlist (“best … in KL”)31%36%33%

Based on ZenWeb’s client sample of 500+ Malaysian SME accounts (2024–2026). Rows total 100%.

The practical reading: informational pages travel well, while local shortlists behave almost like three separate contests. If local intent drives your leads, budget for that fragmentation.

Key takeaway: One good page can earn citations on all three surfaces for informational questions. Local and price questions fragment, so expect to work those separately.

5. What Google Says You Can Safely Ignore

Quick Answer: Google has publicly ruled out four of the tactics sold hardest for Gemini search results: llms.txt files, breaking content into chunks, rewriting pages specifically for AI, and chasing inauthentic mentions. Structured data is useful for rich results, but is not required for generative features.

This is unusually clear guidance, and it saves money. Google’s mythbusting section says Search ignores llms.txt files and needs no content chunking:

Common claimGoogle’s positionDo this instead
“Add an llms.txt file”Search ignores it.Fix crawl and index coverage.
“Chunk your content for AI”Not required; no ideal page length.Write sections a human can follow.
“Rewrite pages for machines”Unnecessary; synonyms are understood.Add first-hand detail others lack.
“Buy mentions everywhere”Inauthentic mentions do little.Earn coverage people would write anyway.
“Schema is what gets you cited”Not required, still useful for rich results.Keep it, stop over-investing.

One row deserves a caveat rather than a dismissal. Directory listings and forum threads still shape what models see about you, which is why directory citations, forum visibility on Reddit and entity records like Wikidata keep coming up. The warning is against manufacturing them, not against being genuinely present — the same logic behind earning brand mentions in AI answers.

Key takeaway: If a proposal for Gemini search results leads with llms.txt, chunking or bought mentions, it is selling work Google has already said it ignores. Ask what it replaces.

6. Which Blockers Actually Show Up in Malaysian SME Audits?

Quick Answer: The most common eligibility blocker found in Malaysian SME audits is content that only renders with JavaScript, followed by thin service pages, missing local detail and leftover noindex tags. Most sites carry more than one at the same time.

The pattern below is why the gates come first. These are not exotic technical problems — they are ordinary build decisions that quietly remove pages from the pool of passages an engine can quote.

BlockerShare of sites affected%

29

18

13

From ZenWeb client tracking across 12 industries, 2024–2026. Bar widths are proportional. Blockers are not mutually exclusive, so shares exceed 100%.

Key takeaway: Most sites that never appear in Gemini search results are blocked by their own build, not out-argued by a competitor. Audit before you write.

7. How to Write a Passage Gemini Will Quote

Quick Answer: Citations attach to sentences, not pages. Write the answer before the argument, name your business inside the sentence, and keep one question per heading. Attach a concrete Malaysian detail, then read the passage alone to see if it still makes sense.

Google’s advice is to write for people and add a viewpoint others cannot copy. That is compatible with making passages liftable; the two only conflict when the writing turns robotic. The order below keeps it readable:

  1. Put the answer first. Lead the section with the conclusion, then justify it. Buried verdicts get skipped.
  2. Name the subject in the sentence. Write “ZenWeb charges…” rather than “we charge…”, so the sentence survives being lifted away from your page.
  3. One question per heading. Sections answering two questions lose to sections answering one cleanly.
  4. Attach one concrete detail. A price band in RM, a city, a turnaround in days. Detail is what makes your sentence more quotable than an identical competitor claim — and it feeds the entity signals that teach Google who you are.
  5. Read it alone. If the passage stops making sense without the paragraph above it, rewrite until it stands up by itself.

Step two does more work than it looks. A consistent, named presence across the web is easier for models to describe, which is part of why earning a Google Knowledge Panel tracks with being recommended rather than merely cited.

Key takeaway: Write passages that survive being quoted out of context. Answer first, name yourself, one question per heading, one concrete Malaysian detail.

8. Is Gemini Showing More Links or Fewer Over Time?

Quick Answer: Across tracked Malaysian buying prompts, the share of answers that carried at least one clickable source rose steadily through 2025 and into 2026, while the average number of sources shown per answer stayed close to four. More answers cite; each answer still cites few.

That combination is the uncomfortable one. The opportunity widens, the slots per answer do not — which is why tracking citations over time beats judging a single screenshot.

QuarterAnswers with a linked sourceAvg sources shownAnswers naming a MY business

Q3 202563%3.728%

Q2 202676%4.139%

Aggregated from ZenWeb-managed campaigns, Malaysia, 2024–2026. Prompt set held constant across quarters.

Key takeaway: More Gemini search results now carry links, and more of them name a Malaysian business — but with roughly four slots per answer, the contest is getting tighter, not looser.

9. How to Check If You Appear in Gemini Search Results

Quick Answer: Use two sources together. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows how your content performs in Google’s AI features. A fixed prompt log, the same 20 to 30 buyer questions run monthly, shows whether you are being named, cited or skipped.

Google points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, and warns against third-party tools claiming access to internal ranking signals. Pair the report with your own log:

  • Fix the prompt list. Twenty to thirty questions a real buyer would type, written once and never quietly edited.
  • Record three outcomes. Named, cited with a link, or absent. Different results, different responses.
  • Run monthly, not daily. Answers vary between sessions, so month-on-month movement is signal and daily movement is noise.
  • Watch what arrives. Visits from AI surfaces behave differently on-site, which is the point of measuring whether AI visitors actually convert.

For a competitive read, the same log supports benchmarking your AI share of voice against rivals — usually a more honest number than counting your own wins.

Key takeaway: Measure with Search Console plus a fixed monthly prompt log. Without a stable prompt list, you cannot tell improvement from variance.

10. What Are Malaysian Buyers Actually Asking?

Quick Answer: Across tracked Malaysian prompts, comparison and price questions carry the highest commercial value but the lowest supply of good local pages. Definition questions are the easiest to win and the least likely to produce an enquiry.

Use this to decide what to write next rather than writing everything. High value plus low local supply is where a mid-sized business can take a slot, and where generative engine optimisation work pays back fastest.

Key takeaway: Write for price, local shortlist and comparison questions first. Definition posts are easy wins that rarely produce an enquiry.

11. Should You Do This In-House or Hire an Agency?

Quick Answer: The eligibility audit and the monthly prompt log are well within reach of an in-house marketer. Rewriting a page library, fixing JavaScript rendering and earning genuine third-party coverage is where most Malaysian SMEs run out of hours and bring in help.

Be honest about which half you are buying. A proposal covering only the cheap half is overpriced. Our breakdown of what an AI search agency actually does and the checklist for picking an AI SEO agency in Malaysia both start from that split.

  • Keep in-house. The prompt log, the Search Console report, and choosing which buyer questions matter this quarter.
  • Bring in help for. Rendering and indexing fixes, a page-by-page rewrite programme, and earning real coverage.
  • Ask before signing. Which pages get rewritten, in what order, and how appearance in AI answers gets reported month by month.

Still deciding what you need overall? Our guide to the types of SEO services beats an AI-only conversation. A specialist answer engine optimisation agency is worth it only once the fundamentals are in place, which is how ZenWeb sequences our SEO engagements.

Key takeaway: Keep measurement in-house, outsource the heavy rewriting and technical work, and make monthly visibility reporting a condition of the contract.

12. Conclusion

Quick Answer: Showing up in Gemini search results is a sequence, not a hack. Clear the eligibility gates, write passages that survive being quoted alone, ignore the tactics Google has ruled out, and measure with a fixed prompt log every month.

The businesses winning slots in Malaysia rarely have the cleverest AI strategy. They have pages that are indexable, answers that are specific, and names that appear somewhere other than their own website.

Start with the audit, fix what it finds, then write for the price and local questions your buyers actually ask. For the full sequence in one place, see our 2026 playbook for ranking your company in AI search.

13. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are Gemini search results the same as AI Overviews?

No, but they are closely related. AI Overviews sit above Google’s organic results, AI Mode is a conversational tab inside Search, and the Gemini app is a separate chat product. All three draw on the same index, so eligibility work benefits all three.

2. Does adding an llms.txt file help me appear in Gemini?

Not for Google. Google states that Search, including its generative AI capabilities, does not use llms.txt or similar files. Creating one neither helps nor harms visibility there, so treat it as optional housekeeping.

3. Do I need schema markup to be cited?

No. Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search. Keep it for rich results and SEO hygiene, but do not expect it to win a citation on its own.

4. How long before changes show up?

Eligibility fixes usually show within a few weeks once pages are re-crawled. Rewritten passages take longer, off-site coverage longer still. Judge movement over months, using a fixed prompt list.

5. Why does a smaller competitor get named instead of us?

Usually because the recommendation is not coming from anybody’s website. Roundups, directories and forum threads feed much of what models say about a market, so a business described consistently across them can beat a better website with thinner outside coverage.
