Thaipusam is one of the most visible Hindu festivals in Malaysia. Every year, devotees walk to Batu Caves, Penang’s hilltop temple and others to fulfil vows to Lord Murugan. For a brand, the question is not “how do we sell this?” but “do we have a useful role here?”
This guide is for Malaysian SMEs that want to get Thaipusam marketing right. At ZenWeb, a Google Partner agency with 500+ Malaysian clients, we plan festive calendars for businesses serving every community. Below: the 2027 dates, a timeline, who has a genuine role, creative rules, channels, budget, a checklist and measurement.

Quick Answer: Thaipusam is a Hindu festival honouring Lord Murugan, held on the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai. In Malaysia it is observed mainly by the Tamil Hindu community, with prayer, fasting, milk-pot offerings and kavadi processions. For marketers, it is a religious observance first and a busy public day second, never a shopping season.
Knowing what the day means is the best way to avoid the common mistakes:
Thaipusam is not Deepavali, which brings open houses, gifts and shopping; our Deepavali marketing ideas cover that season. Thaipusam calls for a quieter, supportive role. For the wider picture, see our guide to multicultural marketing in Malaysia.
Quick Answer: Thaipusam 2027 is expected on Friday 22 January 2027, based on published 2027 holiday calendars. It is a state holiday in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, Putrajaya and Selangor. Kedah’s approach has varied over the years, and other states normally work as usual. Confirm the date against your state government’s official holiday gazette.
The date follows the Tamil calendar, so it moves every year: 1 February in 2026, about ten days earlier in 2027.
A Friday holiday means a long weekend, which affects delivery promises, staffing and reply times. It sits between the 4 January school reopening in our back to school marketing timeline and Chinese New Year on 6–7 February, with Ramadan expected from about 8 February. It also lands in the middle of the January sales slump; our New Year campaign hooks for January show how the rest of the month fits.
Quick Answer: Start planning Thaipusam marketing in early December 2026, about seven weeks out. Decide your role and check staff leave first, brief and review creative by mid-December, update listings and start practical ads from 4 January, and keep 22 January itself for greetings and service rather than selling.
| Timing | Phase | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Early Dec 2026 (7 weeks before) | Decide | Choose your role; list outlets in holiday states; check leave |
| Mid Dec (5 weeks) | Brief and review | Write creative; get a Hindu colleague or community adviser to review it |
| Late Dec (4 weeks) | Prepare | Plan stock, menus and hours; draft WhatsApp and email notices |
| 4–10 Jan 2027 (2–3 weeks) | Go live | Update Google Business Profile and website; start practical search ads |
| 11–21 Jan | Peak | Local ads; notices to consented customers; schedule the greeting |
| Fri 22 Jan | Thaipusam | Greeting only; pause promotions; serve devotees on the ground |
| 23–29 Jan | Close | Thank customers; record results; hand over to CNY and Ramadan |

Small local businesses can manage with two weeks; national brands need all seven. If December is already full of school holiday campaigns or year-end bonus season ads, finish the Thaipusam brief before your team goes on leave. The community review is the step most brands skip, so allow at least a week for it.
Quick Answer: Businesses that meet devotees’ practical needs have the clearest role: vegetarian food, flowers and prayer items, traditional clothing, transport, parking and hotels near temple routes. Most other brands should keep to a sincere greeting, a community contribution done with organisers, or a useful service notice, not a Thaipusam sale.
| Business type | Suitable role | Best channels | Risk if overdone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetarian restaurants and caterers | Serve: vegetarian menus, bulk orders, longer hours | Search, Maps, WhatsApp | Low |
| Florists, prayer-item and traditional clothing shops | Serve: seasonal stock and opening hours | Search, Meta local ads, Maps | Low |
| Transport, parking and hotels near temple sites | Serve: shuttles, parking, early check-in | Search, Maps | Low to medium (no price hikes) |
| National brands (banks, telcos, FMCG) | Support: greeting, volunteering or clean-up help with organisers | Organic social, press | Medium if sales-led |
| Unrelated SMEs and B2B firms | Inform: holiday hours and delivery notices; optional greeting | Email, WhatsApp, website banner | Medium if they push promotions |
| Alcohol or meat-led promotions | Sit out Thaipusam messaging | None | High |

It is the same logic as deciding whether to sit out Meta ads during 11.11: joining a moment you have no role in costs money and credibility. Brands new to Malaysia should read our list of marketing mistakes foreign brands make, and our guide to Malaysia as an ASEAN marketing hub covers running a multi-festival calendar.

Quick Answer: Respectful Thaipusam marketing keeps sacred elements out of sales messages. Use sincere greetings, warm festive colours, real community stories shared with permission, and practical help. Do not use deities, the vel, kavadi or piercings as props, do not joke about vows, and do not attach discounts to the festival.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Greet simply: “Happy Thaipusam” or “Thaipusam Vazhthukkal”, checked by a Tamil speaker | Lord Murugan or the vel on a promotional post |
| Warm yellow and orange tones, flowers, a milk pot shown respectfully | Kavadi or piercing photos for shock value or puns |
| Volunteers and families, shown with permission | “Thaipusam sale”, “vow-worthy deals” or countdown discounts |
| Practical information: hours, parking, menus, road closures | Shoes in temple scenes, or meat and alcohol in festive visuals |
| A community review before posting | Stock photos from other countries or festivals |
Targeting needs the same care. Meta removed detailed targeting options linked to religion in January 2022. Its advertising standards on personal attributes also ban ads that imply a person’s religion, so “Are you celebrating Thaipusam?” can be rejected. Google’s personalised advertising policy treats religious beliefs as a sensitive category too. Target by location, language and interests instead; our guide to Facebook ad targeting in Malaysia shows what remains.
The same principle runs through our guides on Ramadan ads for non-Muslim brands, Hari Raya Haji campaigns, Wesak Day marketing and halal marketing in Malaysia: support the observance, never commercialise the worship.
Quick Answer: Search and maps do most of the work during Thaipusam, because devotees and visitors look for practical things: vegetarian food, flowers, parking and opening hours. Use Meta and TikTok for local awareness and greetings, Google Business Profile and your website for accurate hours, and WhatsApp or email for notices to customers who opted in.
| Channel | What to do | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Ads | Practical local terms (vegetarian catering, florist, parking) with a tight radius | The bare term “thaipusam”, which brings sightseers |
| Meta Ads | Location ads around outlets and temple routes | Religion-implying copy; boosting the greeting |
| TikTok | Your team cooking or volunteering, filmed with permission | Trend sounds over footage of devotion |
| SEO and Google Business Profile | Holiday hours, a vegetarian menu or seasonal page, a post | Wrong hours on Maps over the long weekend |
| Website | A banner on hours and order cut-offs | Festival-themed discount pop-ups |
| WhatsApp and email | Notices on hours, cut-offs and closures to opted-in customers | Blasts to people who never opted in |
Updating your Google Business Profile holiday hours is the most useful single step for most SMEs; our local SEO guide explains why Maps accuracy drives walk-ins. The keyword and radius approach in our back to school Google Ads guide carries over, as does the location targeting in our back to school Facebook ads guide. For WhatsApp etiquette, see what foreign brands get wrong with WhatsApp marketing.
Quick Answer: Most SMEs with a real Thaipusam role need only RM 300 to RM 2,000 in ad spend, spread over the three weeks before 22 January 2027. ZenWeb estimates Meta CPM at about RM 12–35 and Google Search CPC at RM 0.50–3.00 for local January campaigns, rising from mid-January as CNY advertisers arrive.
| Week | Share of budget | Est. Meta CPM (RM) | Est. Google Search CPC (RM) | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4–10 Jan 2027 | 20% | 12–25 | 0.50–2.00 | Listings; menu and order searches |
| 11–17 Jan | 35% | 15–30 | 0.60–2.50 | Local awareness; bulk orders |
| 18–22 Jan | 35% | 18–35 | 0.80–3.00 | Practical searches peak |
| 23–31 Jan | 10% | 20–40 | 0.80–3.50 | Thank-you ads; switch to CNY |

Ranges depend on your radius, competition and creative, and CNY advertisers push costs up from mid-month; our Google Ads cost guide and Facebook ads cost guide explain festive pricing. National brands should spend on the community contribution itself, not on boosting it. Unrelated businesses should spend nothing on Thaipusam ads and put the money into CNY.
Quick Answer: In this illustrative scenario, a vegetarian caterer near Batu Caves spends RM 1,200 over three weeks. Search ads and Google Maps bring most of its 96 enquiries, WhatsApp notices to past customers convert best, and the unpaid greeting post earns goodwill rather than orders. The numbers are modelled, not real client results.
| Channel | Enquiries | Orders | Spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Ads | 34 | 12 | RM 600 |
| Google Business Profile (calls, directions) | 28 | 9 | RM 0 |
| WhatsApp notice to 600 opted-in customers | 22 | 14 | RM 0 ad spend |
| Meta local ads | 12 | 3 | RM 600 |
| Greeting post (organic) | 0 | 0 | RM 0 |

The cheapest channels often win during a religious festival, because they reach people who already trust you. Meta earns its place by reaching nearby families who don’t know you yet. Record your own numbers in your marketing calendar so next year starts from real results.

Quick Answer: Use this Thaipusam marketing checklist from early December: decide your role, confirm the state holiday, get a community review, update hours everywhere, set up location-based ads without religious targeting, message only consented contacts, keep 22 January for greetings, and review the results by the end of January.
Our digital marketing team can run this alongside your CNY campaign.
Quick Answer: Measure your Thaipusam campaign on practical outcomes, not likes: calls and direction requests from Google Business Profile, orders from search ads, replies to WhatsApp notices, and cost per enquiry against a normal January. Also watch comments and ad review status, which tell you quickly if the tone missed the mark.
| Metric | Where to find it | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and directions | Google Business Profile | Up versus the previous three weeks |
| Orders from ads | Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager | Cost per order at or below a normal January |
| WhatsApp replies | WhatsApp Business labels | Repeat orders from past customers |
| Sentiment | Comments, ad review status | No complaints, no rejected ads |
| Festival-week sales | Sales records | Above Thaipusam week last year |
Compare festival week with festival week, not calendar week, since the date moved from 1 February to 22 January. Get conversion tracking live before 4 January; our tracking set-up guide covers GA4 and costs. Likes on a greeting post are a bonus, not the goal.
Thaipusam marketing is less about campaigns and more about conduct. Confirm the 2027 date for your states, decide honestly whether you have a role, then be useful: correct hours, vegetarian options, clear notices and a sincere greeting. Keep sacred symbols out of ads, never target by religion, and let someone from the community review your work.
If no one in your team owns the festive calendar, a fractional CMO or an agency partner can keep every community’s dates, tone and budget in one plan. Our digital marketing services do exactly that.
Thaipusam 2027 is expected on Friday 22 January 2027. It is a holiday in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Perak, Putrajaya and Selangor. Confirm the date with your state government’s official holiday gazette before you plan.
Yes. A sincere, simple greeting is usually welcome. Keep it unpaid, free of offers and sacred imagery, and have the wording checked first.
Generally, no. Discounts tied to a festival of vows read as opportunistic. Offer practical help instead, such as longer hours or vegetarian menus.
No. Meta removed religion-related detailed targeting in 2022, and its ad standards ban copy that implies a person’s religion. Use location, language and interest targeting instead.
Businesses with a real role, such as vegetarian caterers or florists, can work with RM 300 to RM 2,000. Unrelated businesses should spend nothing and stick to greetings and notices.
