Your .com.tw site may hold page one on Google Taiwan and Yahoo Kimo. It is natural to expect some of that strength in Malaysia, where millions of people read Chinese. In practice, very little of it transfers.
This guide is for founders, marketing managers and regional heads planning SEO in Malaysia for Taiwanese companies. It covers what changes in search engines, language, site structure, conversion and authority, and how to plan the first year. It comes from ZenWeb, a Kuala Lumpur Google Partner agency with 500+ clients. For the full launch picture, read our guide for a Taiwanese company expanding to Malaysia first.

Quick Answer: Google ranks pages by the searcher’s country and language. A .com.tw domain points to Taiwan, Traditional Chinese pages do not match how Malaysians type, and your links come from Taiwanese sites. Malaysian searchers see local pages first, so your Taiwan authority gives only a small head start.
Four things hold a Taiwanese site back on Google.com.my:
Every overseas brand faces this, which is why our guide to SEO for foreign companies in Malaysia starts with domain choice. Your Taiwan site is still an asset. It holds product specs, case studies and brand trust you can adapt, but it cannot rank in Malaysia on its own.
Quick Answer: Taiwan splits search between Google, Yahoo and Bing. Malaysia is almost all Google. Malaysia also has more internet users, three search languages instead of one, Simplified rather than Traditional Chinese, and a buying journey that moves to WhatsApp rather than LINE after the click.
| SEO factor | Taiwan | Malaysia |
|---|---|---|
| Google search share (Aug 2026) | 78.5% | 92.99% |
| Yahoo / Bing share (Aug 2026) | 12% / 8.52% | 1.59% / 4.42% |
| Internet users (late 2025) | 22.3 million | 35.4 million |
| Main search languages | Traditional Chinese | English, Bahasa Malaysia, Simplified Chinese |
| Local domain | .tw / .com.tw | .my / .com.my |
| Chat channel after search | LINE Official Account | WhatsApp on a +60 number |

The search shares come from StatCounter’s Taiwan search engine data and Malaysia search engine data. User counts come from DataReportal’s Digital 2026 Taiwan report and its Malaysia report.
What this means for your plan:
For habits foreign brands tend to miss, read how Malaysians search Google. The wider channel comparison sits in Malaysia vs Taiwan digital marketing.
Quick Answer: Use Simplified Chinese, and only as your third language after English and Bahasa Malaysia. Chinese Malaysians learn Simplified characters at school and often search in English. Converting your Traditional pages is a start, but the vocabulary must change too, so research each Chinese keyword locally.
This is the biggest content shift in SEO in Malaysia for Taiwanese companies. How demand splits by language depends on the category:
| Category | English | Bahasa Malaysia | Simplified Chinese |
|---|---|---|---|
| Industrial, electronics and machinery (B2B) | 75% | 17% | 8% |
| Consumer products and gadgets | 50% | 33% | 17% |
| Food, beverage and tea chains | 42% | 38% | 20% |

Taiwanese and Malaysian Chinese often use different words for the same thing. A few examples our writers change:
| Meaning | Taiwan term | Malaysian search term |
|---|---|---|
| Software | 軟體 | 软件, or “software” in English |
| Video | 影片 | 视频 |
| Internet | 網路 | 网络 |
| Air-con service | 冷氣清洗 | aircond service / servis aircond |
Also swap TWD prices for RM, Taiwanese cities for Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Johor Bahru, and LINE IDs for a +60 WhatsApp number. Write BM pages natively; machine-translated Malay reads badly and ranks poorly. Our guides to multilingual SEO in Malaysia and choosing English, BM or Chinese for your website cover the set-up in detail.
Quick Answer: A .com.my domain gives the strongest Malaysian signal but starts with no authority. A /my/ folder on a global .com shares your existing authority and moves faster. Avoid adding Malaysian pages to a .com.tw domain. Whatever you pick, use hreflang so Taiwan and Malaysia pages do not compete.
Google sets out the trade-offs in its guide to managing multi-regional and multilingual sites. How the options fit a Taiwanese brand:
| Your current site | Recommended Malaysian set-up | Why |
|---|---|---|
| .com.tw only | New .com.my domain | A Taiwan country domain cannot target Malaysia |
| Global .com (B2B exporter) | /my/ subfolder | Reuses the authority your export site already has |
| Global .com (consumer brand) | /my/ first, .com.my later if you open stores | Fast start, stronger local trust later |
| Separate platform needed | my. subdomain | Works, but usually shares less authority than a folder |
Tag shared pages with hreflang, for example zh-TW for Taiwan alongside en-MY, ms-MY and zh-MY for Malaysia. Google’s localised versions guide explains the format, and our explainer on hreflang tags lists the usual mistakes. For the page-by-page build, see our Malaysia website guide for Taiwanese companies and the 12-point website localisation checklist.
Quick Answer: Replace your LINE button with a WhatsApp button on a Malaysian +60 number, show RM prices, and add local proof near the top of each page. Malaysian searchers expect to chat before they buy or request a quote. Rankings without a local conversion path waste much of your SEO spend.
Taiwanese sites often push visitors to add a LINE Official Account. Few Malaysians use LINE, so that button quietly kills enquiries. Changes that lift conversion from organic visits:
Track WhatsApp clicks as conversions in Google Analytics, so your SEO reports show real leads, not just traffic. This also tells you which keywords bring buyers rather than browsers.
Quick Answer: Earn links and mentions from Malaysian sources, verify a Google Business Profile for any physical location, and collect reviews from Malaysian customers. Taiwanese forum threads and blogger reviews build brand trust at home, but Malaysian rankings depend on Malaysian signals.
In Taiwan, forum discussions and blogger reviews shape many buying decisions. In Malaysia, Google reviews and local media carry more weight. Sources that work for Taiwanese brands:
Skip cheap link packages; they tend to come from unrelated sites and can hurt rankings. If you run branches in several cities, our local SEO Malaysia guide explains location pages.
Quick Answer: Brand and long-tail keywords usually rank within two to three months. Steady organic enquiries tend to arrive in months four to six, and competitive head terms in months nine to twelve. A /my/ folder on a strong global .com often moves faster than a new .com.my.
| Period | What usually happens | Organic share of leads |
|---|---|---|
| Months 1–2 | URL set-up, hreflang, indexing; brand name ranks | 0–5% |
| Months 3–4 | Product and long-tail BM or Chinese keywords reach page one | 5–15% |
| Months 5–6 | Regular WhatsApp enquiries from category pages | 15–25% |
| Months 7–9 | Distributor links and reviews lift mid-competition terms | 25–35% |
| Months 10–12 | Head terms rank; cost per lead falls | 35–45% |

Quick Answer: Run Google Ads for leads while SEO builds, use Meta Ads to reach buyers before they search, and build a localised website that converts both. Move budget towards SEO as rankings grow. Ad data also shows which English, BM and Chinese keywords actually convert.
Most overseas entrants we manage shift their monthly Malaysian budget like this over year one:
| Phase | Budget split | Split in figures |
|---|---|---|
| Months 1–3 | Website 30% · Google Ads 40% · Meta Ads 15% · SEO 15% | |
| Months 4–6 | Website 5% · Google Ads 45% · Meta Ads 20% · SEO 30% | |
| Months 7–12 | Website 5% · Google Ads 35% · Meta Ads 20% · SEO 40% |

How each channel feeds your SEO:
If you plan to run this from Taipei, read what to expect from a Malaysian marketing agency for Taiwanese firms. Brands from mainland China face a different starting point, covered in SEO in Malaysia for Chinese companies. For the full launch order across every channel, see our guide to expanding your business to Malaysia. Company registration and incentives sit outside this guide; start with MIDA and SSM.
Quick Answer: SEO in Malaysia for Taiwanese companies means one search engine instead of three, three languages instead of one, and WhatsApp instead of LINE. Build a Malaysian URL with hreflang, research keywords locally, earn Malaysian links and give it four to six months, with Google Ads covering the gap.
Taiwanese brands that treat Malaysia as its own search market, rather than an extension of Google Taiwan, win the rankings that bring enquiries. ZenWeb’s SEO services in Malaysia cover keyword research, localised content, technical set-up and link building from one Kuala Lumpur team.
No. Yahoo holds under 2% of Malaysian search, compared with about 12% in Taiwan. Put that effort into Google organic rankings and Google Ads, which reach over 90% of Malaysian searchers.
Use them as a draft only. Many product and tech terms differ between Taiwan and Malaysia, so research Chinese keywords locally and rewrite. Build English and BM pages as well, since they carry most Malaysian demand.
Replace it with WhatsApp on a +60 number. Few Malaysians use LINE, so a LINE-only contact option loses enquiries from visitors your SEO worked hard to attract.
Not for general organic rankings. You need a real Malaysian address to verify a Google Business Profile for map results. Many Taiwanese firms start with a /my/ folder and add a profile once a local office or distributor is in place.
