You set up a custom event for WhatsApp clicks, quotation requests or a booking form. Tag Manager says it fired. Yet when you open GA4 the next morning, the event is nowhere in your reports, or it shows up with no useful detail.
This guide is for Malaysian business owners and marketers facing exactly that. It covers the point after the event fires: why GA4 custom events are not showing in reports, what to check first, how long each fix takes and how to stop it happening again.
If the event never fires at all, the problem sits earlier in the chain. Start with our guide on GA4 events not firing, then come back here.
The video below shows the parameter side of the problem inside GA4, which is where most “missing” custom event data actually hides.

Quick Answer: Most of the time, GA4 custom events are not showing because the reports have not processed yet, or because the event’s parameters were never registered as custom dimensions. Less often, a data filter, thresholding, a wrong property or a naming mismatch hides the event. Confirm it in Realtime first, then work down the list.
When a Malaysian client tells us an event “disappeared”, we record what the real cause turned out to be. The ranking below shows how often each cause came up.
| Root cause | Share of cases |
|---|---|
| Checked before processing finished | 31% |
| Parameters not registered as custom dimensions | 27% |
| Event name mismatch (case, spelling, spaces) | 14% |
| Sent to the wrong GA4 property or stream | 11% |
| Data filter excluding the traffic | 9% |
| Thresholding or low volume | 8% |

The top two causes need no code changes at all: one is patience, the other is a setting in Admin. That is why we always ask clients to wait and check registration before anyone touches Tag Manager.

Quick Answer: Trigger the event yourself, then open Reports › Realtime and look for it in the event count card within a few minutes. For more detail, use DebugView. If the event appears there, GA4 is receiving it and the issue is in reporting. If it does not, the tag is the problem.
This one test splits the problem in half. Google’s Confirm that you’re collecting data article explains that Realtime shows the last 30 minutes, while many reports and explorations take 24–48 hours to process.
To see each event and its parameters, open DebugView. Google’s Monitor events in DebugView article lists the current path as Admin › Data display › DebugView. Your device shows up there once you use Tag Assistant or Tag Manager preview mode.
Quick Answer: A new custom event appears in Realtime within minutes, but standard reports and explorations can take 24–48 hours. New custom dimensions also need 24–48 hours before they show values. If you created the event yesterday, wait two full days before you treat it as missing.
Different parts of GA4 update at different speeds. This is why an event can look “missing” in one place and fine in another.
| Where you look | Minutes | Day 1 | Day 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Realtime report | Visible | Last 30 min only | Last 30 min only |
| DebugView (debug devices) | Visible | Visible | Visible |
| Engagement › Events report | Not yet | Often partial | Usually complete |
| Explorations | Not yet | Often partial | Usually complete |
| New custom dimension values | Not yet | Processing | Usually visible |

Two traps catch Malaysian teams often. First, the date range: GA4 defaults to a range that may end yesterday, so today’s events are not included. Second, GA4 does not backfill. Any date before you created the event will always be empty.
Quick Answer: Confirm the event in DebugView, wait 48 hours, then search for it in Reports › Engagement › Events with the right date range. Register its parameters as custom dimensions, check data filters and the event name, and mark it as a key event if you need it counted as a lead.
If you can no longer reach Admin at all, you cannot finish steps 5 to 7. Recover the property first with our guide to lost admin access to GA4, and if the container is also locked, see lost access to Google Tag Manager.
Quick Answer: GA4 collects every parameter you send, but it only shows custom parameters in reports after you register them as custom dimensions or metrics. Until then, you see the event count but none of the detail, such as which button, form or product was clicked. Registration is not retroactive.
This is the most common reason a client says “the event shows, but it is useless”. Google’s About custom dimensions and metrics article explains that new definitions take 24–48 hours to show, and a standard property allows up to 50 event-scoped custom dimensions.
| Data type | Not registered | Registered |
|---|---|---|
| Event name and count | Visible | Visible |
| Custom parameters in DebugView | Visible | Visible |
| Custom parameters in reports | Hidden | Visible from registration date |
| Custom parameters in explorations | Hidden | Visible from registration date |
| Data from before registration | Hidden | Shows as (not set) |

Register parameters the day you create an event, not after the first report looks empty. If your registered dimension shows rows of (not set), that is a separate issue covered in (not set) in GA4 reports. And if the event comes from a built-in feature such as scrolls or outbound clicks, check GA4 enhanced measurement settings instead.
Quick Answer: Yes. An active internal or developer traffic filter permanently removes matching events, so your own test clicks never reach reports. Thresholding can also hide rows when user counts are low or demographic data is involved. Neither is a tracking fault, but both can leave GA4 custom events not showing in reports even when tracking works.
Google’s data filters article is clear that filtered data is never processed and cannot be recovered. That matters for Malaysian SMEs that filter their office IP: if staff test the enquiry form from the office, those events are excluded by design.
Events can also be counted but filed under the wrong channel. If your custom event conversions show up mostly as Unassigned, see unassigned traffic in GA4.

Quick Answer: Only waiting and widening the date range bring back data you already collected. Every other fix, such as registering dimensions, renaming events, removing filters or correcting the property, works only from the day you make it. Data lost before the fix stays lost.
| Fix | Time to apply | Past data recovered? |
|---|---|---|
| Wait for processing / widen date range | 0 minutes (48-hour wait) | Yes |
| Register custom dimensions | About 10 minutes | No |
| Correct event name in the tag | 15–30 minutes | Partly (old name still in reports) |
| Point tag to the right property | 15–30 minutes | Only in the old property |
| Remove or adjust a data filter | About 5 minutes | No |

Because most fixes only work going forward, write the fix date into your monthly report so nobody compares a broken month with a clean one. If you also need older months for comparison, check your retention setting in old data missing in GA4, since exploration detail can expire after two months by default.
Quick Answer: Keep one written event plan with exact names and parameters, register dimensions on launch day, test every new event in DebugView, and re-check after any website or plugin change. Most repeat problems come from people adding events without telling anyone.
Also know when the problem is not GA4. If shoppers cannot see your products to begin with, fix delivery first: Google Shopping ads not showing, a WhatsApp catalog not showing, or Google Business Profile photos not showing. No tracking setup can count visits that never happen.
Quick Answer: If GA4 custom events are not showing after you have worked through this guide, get help. That applies when an event shows in DebugView but is still missing from reports after 48 hours and the checks above, when key events feed your ad bidding, or when nobody on your team has admin access. Those cases usually need a full tracking review.

When GA4 custom events are not showing, first prove the event reaches GA4 in Realtime or DebugView. Then wait 48 hours, register the parameters, match the name exactly and check filters. Most cases are solved in Admin, not in code. If you are still building your tracking from scratch, our simple guide to GA4 is a good place to start.
Usually because reports take 24–48 hours to process, or because an active developer traffic filter excludes debug-mode events. Wait two days, check Admin › Data filters, and test again as a normal visitor on mobile data instead of in preview mode.
No. Custom event names appear in the Events report automatically once processed. What needs registering is each custom parameter you want to analyse, such as button text or form name, as an event-scoped custom dimension.
No. Custom dimensions only fill from the date you create them, and new ones take 24–48 hours to show values. Older events keep their counts, but the parameter detail stays hidden or shows as (not set).
GA4 event names are case sensitive, so whatsapp_click and WhatsApp_Click count as two events. Pick one name, fix the tag that sends the other, and use a modify event rule if you need to merge new data going forward.
