You renamed your Page for a rebrand, a new branch or a cleaner name, and Facebook said no. Your ads still run under the old name, your WhatsApp and Instagram now look mismatched, and the notice gives you very little detail.
This guide is for Malaysian business owners and marketers dealing with a rejected Facebook Page name change right now. It ranks the likely causes, shows the current menu path from Meta’s Help Centre, explains how to rewrite a name so it passes, and covers realistic review times.
One distinction first: this is about a name request being refused while your Page stays live. If your whole Page has disappeared from public view, read our guide on a Facebook Page that has been unpublished instead. That is a different problem with a different fix.
The short video below shows where the name setting sits in the current Facebook layout, so you can follow along.

Quick Answer: Most rejections come from the name itself, not your account. The usual culprits are a slogan or keywords stuffed into the name, a jump to a brand that looks unrelated to the Page’s history, the word “official”, strange capitals or symbols, or a single generic word or place name. Meta reviews every request against its Page name guidelines.
Meta’s guidelines for Facebook Page names ask for names that are simple, specific and grammatically correct. When ZenWeb reviews a rejected request for Malaysian clients, the cause usually falls into this list.
| Most likely cause | Share of cases |
|---|---|
| Slogan, keywords or description added to the name | 29% |
| New name looks unrelated to the Page’s history | 22% |
| Odd capitals, emoji, symbols or punctuation | 16% |
| “Official” or another brand’s name used without the right | 13% |
| Single generic word or place name only | 10% |
| Page restriction or recent name change blocking edits | 10% |

The “unrelated history” group is the one owners miss. If a Page with five years of posts as a bakery suddenly asks to become a property agency, the reviewer sees a Page being repurposed, which is a common scam pattern. That is also why hacked Pages often get renamed; if a name change you never requested appeared, follow our guide to recovering admin access to a hacked Facebook Page first.

Quick Answer: A rejection means Meta reviewed the new name and refused it. A greyed-out or missing Edit button usually means an access or timing problem: you lack full Facebook access, someone renamed the Page recently, or it is a regional Page inside a global Page. A restricted Page cannot be edited until the restriction clears.
Meta’s help article on how to change your Facebook Page name lists the reasons a name may not be editable. Match your screen to the right row before trying again.
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Notification: request not approved | Name breaks the Page name guidelines | Rewrite the name (Section 4) and resubmit once |
| No Edit option next to Name | You only have task or partial access | Ask a full-control admin to grant Facebook access |
| Edit greyed out after a recent rename | Meta limits how often a name can change | Wait, then try again; do not create a new Page |
| Name locked on a country Page | Regional Page within a global Page structure | Ask the global Page owner to make the change |
| All edits blocked, warning on the Page | Page restriction from a policy issue | Resolve the restriction first, then rename |

If the block comes from the admin’s personal profile rather than the Page, fix that first. A suspended admin cannot request anything, so see our guides to a disabled Facebook account appeal and a failed Facebook identity confirmation. Page access is also tied to who owns the Page in your business portfolio; our explainer on who owns your ad account, Page and pixel helps you check.
Quick Answer: Switch into your Page, open Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Page setup and Name. Click Edit, type the new name, choose Review Change, enter your password and submit the request. Only people with full Facebook access to the Page can do this, and changing the name does not change your Page username.
This is the current desktop path from Meta’s Help Centre. Labels shift from time to time, so trust the on-screen wording if it differs slightly.
Once approved, update the rest of your Meta setup. A WhatsApp Business display name that no longer matches your Page can be refused too; see our guide on a rejected WhatsApp display name. If the rename broke the link between the two, our walkthrough on how to link WhatsApp to your Facebook Page fixes it. Message templates that mention the old brand may also need resubmitting, covered in our guide to a rejected WhatsApp template message.
Quick Answer: Strip the name back to the business name customers actually use. Move slogans, keywords, prices and promos into the Page’s intro or About section. Use normal Title Case, drop emoji and symbols, add a real location only if it is part of how you trade, and keep it clearly connected to the old name.
Most Malaysian rejections we fix are written like a shop banner, not a business name. Here is how typical refused names were rewritten into versions that were approved.
| Rejected name | Guideline broken | Approved-style rewrite |
|---|---|---|
| Kedai Kek Sedap Murah PJ – Order Now!! | Slogan, promo and punctuation | Kak Ana Bakery Petaling Jaya |
| SEJUK AIRCOND SERVICE ❄️ BEST IN KL | All caps, emoji, claim | Sejuk Aircond Service Kuala Lumpur |
| Official Samsung Repair Johor | “Official” plus another brand’s name | Tech Fix Phone Repair Johor Bahru |
| Tuition | Single generic word | Bright Minds Tuition Centre Ipoh |
| Old: Mei Ling Cakes → New: Prime Homes Realty | Unrelated to Page history | Start a new Page for the new business |

Note the last row. If the business has genuinely changed, a brand-new Page is the honest route; renaming a Page with an audience built for something else is what reviewers are trained to stop. A real rebrand of the same business is different. Keep a visible link, such as “Mei Ling Cakes” becoming “Mei Ling Patisserie”, and post about the rebrand before you submit.
Also avoid names that copy a well-known brand. Besides rejection, it can draw impersonation reports; our guide to reporting a fake Facebook Page shows how seriously Meta treats lookalikes.
Quick Answer: Meta does not publish a fixed review time. In ZenWeb’s client cases, small corrections such as fixing a typo are often approved within a day, while full rebrands can take several days. There is usually no formal appeal for a refused name, so the practical route is a better-written request.
Plan a rebrand launch around the realistic range, not the fastest case.
| Type of change | Within 24 hours | 1–3 days | 4–7 days | Over 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typo or spacing fix | 65% | 30% | 5% | 0% |
| Adding or changing a location | 45% | 40% | 10% | 5% |
| Same-business rebrand | 20% | 45% | 25% | 10% |
| Resubmission after a rejection | 25% | 40% | 20% | 15% |

While you wait, your ads keep running under the current name. Once the new name goes live, some ads may go through review again, so watch Ads Manager for a few days. If ads get flagged, our guide to fixing a rejected Facebook ad helps, and if delivery suddenly drops, check our guide on Facebook ads getting no impressions.
Quick Answer: Make the new name visible on your Page and website before you submit, keep your SSM registration and any trademark papers ready in case Meta asks, and plan the follow-on changes to WhatsApp, Instagram, Shop and verification. A rebrand that looks prepared gets through review far more smoothly than a surprise switch.
For a genuine rebrand, such as a new trading name registered with SSM or a merger, build a clear trail first:

Quick Answer: Check every new name against Meta’s guidelines before submitting, rename rarely, keep at least two full-access admins, and secure every admin profile. Escalate to ZenWeb when two careful requests have failed, when a rebrand deadline is close, or when the rename is tangled with hacked, restricted or disabled accounts.
A quick pre-submit check catches most problems:
As a Google Partner agency serving 500+ Malaysian clients, ZenWeb sorts out these Meta access and naming tangles every month. Call us when the rename sits on top of a bigger issue, such as an admin’s disabled Instagram account, a restricted Page, or ads that depend on the Page staying healthy. We never use borrowed documents or lookalike names to force an approval. Our Meta Ads management service keeps your Page, ads and brand consistent.
Quick Answer: A rejected Facebook Page name change is usually a wording problem. Confirm you have full access, rewrite the name as a simple real business name, prepare your rebrand trail, and resubmit once. Use only official routes and honest documents.
A refused rename feels like Facebook is blocking your rebrand, but in most cases it is asking for a cleaner name. Fix the wording, keep the change connected to your history, and roll the new name out across Meta only after approval. For help with Meta and every other channel, start at ZenWeb’s home page.
There is usually no formal appeal button for a refused name. The practical fix is to rewrite the name so it meets Meta’s Page name guidelines and submit a new request. Check you have full Facebook access to the Page before you try again.
Meta limits how often a Page can be renamed and blocks edits if someone with access changed the name recently, but it does not publish an exact interval. Wait for the Edit option to return rather than creating a new Page.
Changing the Page name does not change your Page username. Your ads keep running, but some may be reviewed again under the new name, so check Ads Manager for a few days after approval.
A real location is fine when it is part of how you trade, such as a branch in Petaling Jaya. Keywords, slogans and promotions are not allowed in the name and belong in your Page’s intro or About section instead.
