Search for the best email marketing software and you get the same list every time, in a slightly different order. Mailchimp, Brevo, MailerLite, Klaviyo, and a handful of names nobody in Malaysia has ever heard of. Every tool has five stars. Every review ends with “it depends on your needs”.
That is not a decision. It is a shrug with affiliate links attached.
So we did it differently. We priced all five tools at the same list size, then pulled the numbers from Malaysian SME accounts under our management to see which features people actually open once the invoice starts. The gap between what SMEs buy and what they use turned out to be the real story — and it changes which tool is the right answer for you.
The walkthrough below runs through the main platforms before we get into the numbers.

Quick Answer: There is no single winner for every Malaysian SME. Brevo wins on cost for big lists and occasional sending. MailerLite wins for small teams who want a clean editor. Mailchimp wins when the account must survive staff turnover. Klaviyo wins for online stores. Zoho Campaigns wins if your CRM is already Zoho.
Here is the whole article in five lines. If you only read this section, you still have your answer:
Still torn between the two most common picks? The Mailchimp vs Brevo head-to-head settles that one on billing model alone.

Quick Answer: We scored each platform on four things a Malaysian SME feels within a year: the twelve-month cost at a realistic list size, whether a non-marketer can run it alone, whether it handles the emails your website sends automatically, and how easily you can leave. Feature counts were ignored.
Feature lists are how software vendors win comparisons they should lose. A tool with 40 automation triggers looks stronger than one with six — right up until you check that the client uses two.
So we applied the same test we used in our Semrush review: not “what can it do”, but “what will this SME still be doing with it in month twelve”. Four criteria survived that filter:
Quick Answer: Priced at the same 2,000 contacts and 8,000 emails a month, the five tools land roughly RM50 to RM220 apart. Zoho Campaigns is cheapest, Mailchimp dearest, and Brevo and MailerLite sit close together in the middle. The spread is real money — about RM2,000 a year between the ends.
Every vendor prices on a different unit, so the only fair comparison is one shared scenario. We used a list of 2,000 contacts sending 8,000 emails a month — a typical Malaysian SME sending one campaign a week. Prices come from each vendor’s published 2026 plans, and our breakdown of email marketing costs in Malaysia puts the software line in the context of the full budget.
| Tool | Meters | Approx. monthly cost | Free plan stops at | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Campaigns | Contacts | ~USD12 (~RM50) | 2,000 contacts, 6,000 emails/month | Businesses already on Zoho CRM |
| Brevo | Emails sent | ~USD23 (~RM97) | 300 emails/day, contacts free | Big lists, occasional sending, online shops |
| MailerLite | Subscribers | ~USD24 (~RM100) | 250 subscribers, 2,500 emails/month | Small teams, newsletters, one operator |
| Klaviyo | Active profiles | ~USD45 (~RM189) | 250 profiles, 500 emails/month | E-commerce with real order data |
| Mailchimp | Contacts | ~USD52 (~RM218) | 250 contacts, 500 emails/month | Teams that will hand the account over |
Sources: published 2026 plan information from the Mailchimp Help Centre, Brevo Help Centre, MailerLite pricing page, Klaviyo pricing page and Zoho Campaigns pricing page, July 2026. Costs rounded and modelled at the stated scenario; ringgit illustrative at RM4.20/USD, taxes excluded.
Two things jump out. Mailchimp costs more than four times Zoho at the same list, and Brevo’s cheap position depends entirely on send volume — mail that list daily instead of weekly and Brevo climbs while Mailchimp does not move.
Quick Answer: Across Malaysian SME email accounts under ZenWeb management, 92% send a campaign each month and 74% look at the open-rate report. But only 29% segment their list, 24% run an automation, and 11% ever A/B test a subject line. Most SMEs are paying for a platform and using an email button.
This is the chart that should decide your purchase, and almost no review publishes it. Feature-rich plans are sold on capability. This is consumption.
| Feature used monthly | Share of accounts | |
|---|---|---|
| Send a campaign | 92% | |
| Read the open-rate report | 74% | |
| Reuse a saved template | 61% | |
| Segment the list | 29% | |
| Run an automation or drip | 24% | |
| A/B test a subject line | 11% | |
| Clean or prune the list | 9% |

The bottom three rows are where the money leaks. Segmentation is the single biggest lever on open rates, and seven in ten accounts never touch it — which is exactly why so many owners end up reading our guide to fixing low email open rates. Start with what list segmentation actually means before you upgrade a plan to get more of it.
Quick Answer: Match the tool to your list shape, not your industry. A café with 900 contacts and two campaigns a month pays around RM540 a year on Brevo. A consultancy with 400 contacts and a weekly newsletter pays about RM600 on MailerLite. An online store with 6,000 profiles pays roughly RM5,000 on Klaviyo — and earns it back.
Four Malaysian SME profiles, four different right answers. The bills below are modelled on the vendors’ 2026 tiering, not quotations.
| Business shape | List & sending | Software that fits | Modelled 12-month bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Café or retail chain | 900 contacts, 2 campaigns/month | Brevo | ~RM540 (vs ~RM1,300 on Mailchimp) |
| B2B consultancy | 400 contacts, weekly newsletter | MailerLite or Mailchimp | ~RM600 |
| Online store | 6,000 profiles, flows + campaigns | Klaviyo | ~RM5,000 |
| Property or services firm | 12,000 contacts, quarterly blasts | Brevo | ~RM900 (vs ~RM6,000+ on Mailchimp) |
Illustrative scenarios. List and sending patterns from ZenWeb client tracking, 2024–2026; bills modelled on each vendor’s published 2026 tiering at RM4.20/USD, taxes and add-ons excluded.
Row four is the one that surprises owners. A property firm storing 12,000 old enquiries and mailing them four times a year is, on a contact-metered tool, renting a warehouse to post four letters. That is a list problem before it is a software problem — see how to clean and re-engage a decaying list.

Quick Answer: Switching is rising. Across ZenWeb client accounts, 14% changed email platform in 2024, 19% in 2025 and 23% in the first half of 2026, while average software spend climbed from about RM118 to RM161 a month. The reason moved from “price went up” to “we pay for features we never use”.
Nobody switches email software for fun. The migration costs a day, and the automations rarely survive it. So the pattern below is worth reading as a warning about the first choice.
| Year | Avg. monthly spend | Accounts that switched | Leading reason given |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | ~RM118 | 14% | Price rise at renewal |
| 2025 | ~RM142 | 19% | List grew past a pricing tier |
| 2026 (H1) | ~RM161 | 23% | Paying for features never used |

Read the third column with the previous chart in mind. Spend went up by roughly a third in two years while feature usage barely moved. SMEs are buying more platform and sending the same newsletter — and AI features are the newest line on that bill, which is why we broke down which AI email marketing tools are worth paying for separately.
Quick Answer: Free plans are real, but they end fast. Mailchimp, MailerLite and Klaviyo all stop around 250 contacts. Brevo stores contacts free and caps you at 300 emails a day; Zoho Campaigns gives 2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails a month. For a genuinely free start, only the last two are serious.
A free plan is a trial with no clock on it. Whether it is useful depends on what it meters:
If cost is the whole constraint right now, our roundup of the best free email marketing tools to try in 2026 compares the free tiers properly, including the ones that put their logo in your footer. And if you are still deciding what these emails are even for, start with the simple EDM guide for Malaysian SMEs.
Quick Answer: No email platform decides what to say, who to say it to, or how often. It will not clean your list, warm your domain, or notice that your emails are landing in Promotions. Those are the jobs that move revenue, and every one of them sits outside the subscription.
Every tool on this page sends email competently. None of them has ever written a subject line worth opening.
That is where the SME spend actually goes wrong. The platform is RM100 a month; the silence costs far more. An unopened list is not a software fault — it is usually a deliverability problem (emails landing in spam), a follow-up problem (no follow-up sequence in place), or a strategy problem (blasting emails but making no sales).
ZenWeb is a Google Partner agency running email, search and paid social for more than 500 Malaysian businesses. We are happy to set the platform up in your name and hand you the login — but the part you are really buying is the campaign calendar behind it, as part of a wider digital marketing programme.
Quick Answer: Pick Brevo for a big list you mail occasionally, MailerLite for a small list and one operator, Mailchimp if the account must outlive its owner, Klaviyo if email drives store revenue, and Zoho Campaigns if you are already on Zoho. Then spend the saved budget on what you send.
The best email marketing software is the one your team will still be using in month twelve. On our numbers, that is rarely the one with the longest feature list — it is the one whose bill still makes sense when the list has doubled.
Choose on list shape. Buy the cheapest tool that clears the job. Then put the difference into segmentation, subject lines and a proper marketing automation setup — because that is where the returns actually live.
For most Malaysian SMEs, Brevo. It stores contacts free, bills only for emails sent, and includes the transactional email your website needs. MailerLite is the better pick if you want the simplest editor, and Mailchimp if the account must be handed to a new hire later.
At 2,000 contacts sending weekly, expect roughly RM50 to RM220 a month depending on the platform. Across our client accounts the average sits near RM161 a month in 2026. Anything far above that usually means you are paying for features nobody is switching on.
It is, but for a narrower reason than most people think. Mailchimp is the most expensive of the five at a growing list size, and its free plan stops at 250 contacts. What you are buying is familiarity — almost every marketing hire in Malaysia can run it on day one.
Klaviyo, if email is a real revenue channel and your store has order data worth using. It costs more than the others and ties each ringgit back to a flow. If the store is small or just starting, Brevo does the job for a fraction of the price.
The software has never been the bottleneck. Only 29% of the SME accounts we track segment their list and 24% run any automation, which means most owners are paying for capability they never use. The value is in deciding what to send and to whom — not in owning the login.
