Free UTM Builder: Tag Your Campaign Links for GA4 in Seconds

TL;DR: This free UTM builder adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to any page address so Google Analytics 4 knows which campaign sent each visitor. Pick where you will share the link and it fills source and medium for you, lowercases every value, swaps spaces out and warns you before a mistake splits your report.

Link builder

Build a tagged campaign link for GA4

Paste your page, pick where the link will be shared and name the campaign. The tool fills source and medium, cleans capitals and spaces, and gives you one link to copy.

2Where will you share the link? Sets the source and medium for you

3Check the source and medium Source = who sent the click. Medium = what kind of link it is

Keep both on your team's fixed list, so one channel never splits into two rows.

Running Meta ads? Use the same name as the campaign in Ads Manager.

5Compare creatives or keywords? (optional) Leave blank unless you will report on them

6How does your team join words? Pick one and never mix them
How this builder works

It adds utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign (plus content and term if you fill them) to your page address, the same parameters Google Analytics 4 reads from any builder. It lowercases every value, swaps spaces for your separator, removes symbols that break a link, replaces any old UTM tags on the address and keeps the rest of it, including a #section at the end. Nothing you type leaves this page.

The presets and warnings follow our guides on how to set up UTM tracking and the best UTM builder tools. The channel figures come from ZenWeb client tracking across Malaysian SME accounts, 2024–2026, and are typical patterns, not guarantees. Only tag links that bring people in from outside: never tag your own menu or internal links.

22%of WhatsApp broadcast clicks still carry their tags when they reach GA4
~90%of untagged WhatsApp clicks are reported as Direct traffic
~6 in 10audited accounts split campaigns with mixed capitals
41%of SME accounts still build links by editing an old one

Most link builders are a blank form that glues whatever you type onto a link. That is how one campaign ends up as “Facebook”, “facebook” and “fb” in the same report. This one starts from a fixed list of sources and mediums and cleans each value as you type. The rules come from our guides on how to set up UTM tracking and the best UTM builder tools, based on the tracking work the ZenWeb team does for Malaysian businesses.

      1. How do you use this UTM builder?

Quick Answer: Paste the page address, pick where the link will be shared, check the source and medium it fills in, then name the campaign with the year. Add content or term only if you will compare creatives or keywords. Copy the finished link, or copy it as a row for your team’s link sheet.

      1. Paste your page. Any old UTM tags on it are replaced.
      2. Pick the channel. Email, social, Meta ads, WhatsApp, QR, partner, Google Ads or other.
      3. Check source and medium. The preset fills both; edit the source if needed.
      4. Name the campaign. Date it, for example raya_2026.
      5. Add content or term. Optional, to tell two buttons or videos apart.
      6. Choose underscores or hyphens. One for the whole team, never mixed.

      2. Which source and medium should each channel use?

Quick Answer: Source is who sent the click, medium is what kind of link it was, and campaign is which push it belongs to. Keep one medium per channel type: email for newsletters, organic_social for unpaid posts, paid_social for Meta ads and referral for partners. Google Ads needs no UTMs at all.

The bottom rows are where Malaysian marketing lives, and where tags get lost: a retyped WhatsApp link, a swapped bio link, a QR code made from the plain address. Those visits pile up as unexplained direct traffic in GA4. Forward the tagged link, never retype it.

Key takeaway: Tags are lost in transit, not when the link is built. The channels you own outright, WhatsApp, bio links and print, need the most care.

      3. Why does the builder change my capitals and spaces?

Quick Answer: UTM values are case sensitive, so GA4 stores Facebook and facebook as two different sources. A space becomes %20 and the row looks broken. The builder lowercases every value, swaps spaces for your separator and removes symbols that break a link, so one campaign always shows as one row.

GA4 never warns you about these errors. From our account reviews:

      • Mixed capitals: about 6 in 10 accounts. One channel splits into several rows.
      • Spaces in values: about 4 in 10 accounts. Values show as %20 and look broken.
      • Made-up mediums: about 5 in 10 accounts. Traffic falls outside GA4’s channel groups.
      • Hand-tagged Google Ads links: about 3 in 10 accounts. Ads and GA4 numbers stop agreeing, so the Google Ads option gives no link.

Half your traffic sitting in “direct / none”?

That is usually a tagging problem, not a demand problem.

      4. How do you check a UTM link in GA4?

Quick Answer: Click the tagged link on your own phone, then open GA4 Realtime and confirm the source and medium match. A week later, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the dimension to Session campaign. Standard reports can take up to 24 hours to show a new campaign.

      1. Log the link. Copy it as a sheet row for your team.
      2. Test before launch. One click on your phone, checked in Realtime.
      3. Review a week in. Two near-identical rows mean the naming broke.

For Meta ads, paste the parameters into the ad’s URL parameters field; our guide to launching your first Facebook ad campaign shows where it sits. For chat enquiries, see WhatsApp leads not being tracked.

      5. Frequently Asked Questions

      1. Is this UTM builder free?

Yes, with no sign-up. It runs in your browser, so what you type is not sent anywhere. It builds the same parameters as Google’s Campaign URL Builder, with naming rules applied.

      2. Should I add UTM parameters to Google Ads links?

No. Auto-tagging already passes Google Ads campaign, ad group and keyword data into GA4. Hand-built UTMs on top can overwrite it, as our guide to GA4 and Google Ads numbers not matching explains.

      3. Which UTM parameters are required?

Use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on every link. Google Analytics Help notes that missing parameters show up as “(not set)”. Add utm_content only to compare two creatives, and utm_term for paid keywords.

      4. Can I tag links to my own website pages?

No. Tag only links that bring people in from outside. Tagging your own menu or internal links restarts the session and wipes out the visitor’s original source.
