Your Meta charges
An estimate from the published tax rate, not a tax invoice or tax advice. Tell us your platforms and budget and we'll plan spend and management fees as separate, clear lines.
Your ad budget says RM 3,000, but the card statement says RM 3,240. The gap is Malaysia's service tax on digital services, and it lands on every charge from every big ad platform. This ads SST calculator shows the tax on each bill, the total charged and what it adds up to over a year. The rules come from ZenWeb's guides to Facebook ads billing and SST in Malaysia and Google Ads billing and SST.
New to ad billing? The short video below shows where the payment and billing settings sit in Meta Ads Manager.
1. How do you use the ads SST calculator?
Quick Answer: Type your monthly amount for Meta, Google Ads and TikTok, then say whether those figures are before tax or already include it. Pick the bill date and how many months to plan. The ads SST calculator shows the tax on each platform, the total charged and the yearly figure.
- Monthly amount per platform. Leave a platform at 0 if you don't use it.
- Before tax or tax included. Choose "before tax" for the budget you set in the platform. Choose "tax included" to split an amount from your card statement into spend and tax.
- Bill date. Bills from 1 March 2024 carry 8%. Older invoices, back to 1 January 2020, carried 6%.
- Months to plan. One, three, six or twelve months.
- Meta account stage. This estimates how many separate Meta charges to expect each month.
The amounts already filled in are only an example. If you are still deciding how much to spend, our guide to the minimum budget for Facebook ads sets a sensible floor.
2. How much SST is added to Meta, Google and TikTok ads?
Quick Answer: 8% of your ad spend, on every charge. Meta and Google have added it to Malaysian accounts since 1 March 2024, and TikTok charges 8% to accounts with a Malaysian business address. The tax is worked out from your business address, so you can't switch it off. Budget for spend plus 8%.
| Monthly ad spend | Total billed | 8% service tax |
|---|---|---|
| RM 500 | RM 540 | RM 40 |
| RM 1,000 | RM 1,080 | RM 80 |
| RM 3,000 | RM 3,240 | RM 240 |
| RM 5,000 | RM 5,400 | RM 400 |
| RM 10,000 | RM 10,800 | RM 800 |

A worked example with the sample inputs: RM 3,000 on Meta and RM 2,000 on Google Ads is RM 5,000 of spend. The ads SST calculator for Malaysia adds RM 240 plus RM 160 of tax. You are charged RM 5,400 a month, or RM 64,800 over 12 months, of which RM 4,800 is tax. Going the other way, a RM 1,080 charge splits into RM 1,000 of spend and RM 80 of tax.
For TikTok, our digital service tax guide points to TikTok's Malaysia DST help article, which confirms the same 8%. Our TikTok marketing price guide covers what the spend itself buys.
Key takeaway: Set your plan on spend plus 8%, not spend alone. A management fee is billed separately and may carry its own tax, so keep it as its own line.

Quick Answer: Meta bills against a billing threshold. You are charged each time your ad costs reach it, and once more on your monthly bill date for the rest. New accounts start with a low threshold, so several charges a month is normal. As payments clear, Meta raises it and charges get fewer and larger.
The calculator's last question uses this typical threshold ladder from our Meta ads billing guide:
- Brand-new account: about RM 50, so several charges a week at moderate budgets.
- After the first cleared payment: about RM 125.
- Spending steadily: about RM 250, with fewer, larger charges.
- Established account: about RM 500, roughly weekly at mid-size budgets.
- Mature, high spend: RM 1,250 or more, often one threshold charge plus the bill-date charge.
Meta sets these amounts itself, so use the count as a reconciling guide: added together, the month's charges should equal your Meta spend plus 8%. Google Ads works differently: on automatic payments it charges at a payment threshold or 30 days after the last charge, and issues one tax invoice a month.
Key takeaway: Several Meta charges in a month are threshold charges, not errors. A new account's low threshold simply means more, smaller charges.
4. Can you claim the SST on your ad bills?
Quick Answer: Ad spend that earns business income is generally a deductible expense, and the platform's monthly tax invoice is your record. How the 8% itself is treated depends on your SST registration and how your business accounts for imported services. Confirm it with your accountant or a licensed tax agent.
ZenWeb is a marketing agency, not a tax adviser, so the calculator gives you numbers to plan with, not tax advice. What your accountant needs is each platform's tax invoice, not a card statement:
- Meta: Billing, then Payment activity. Receipts come per charge, the tax invoice per month.
- Google Ads: Billing, then Documents, for the monthly tax invoice.
- Both: check your company name, address and "Sold to" country before you file.
Our guide to whether advertising is tax deductible in Malaysia explains the LHDN side. For the fee side of the bill, see our breakdown of the Facebook ads management fee in Malaysia.
Key takeaway: Save every monthly tax invoice the day it is issued. Chasing a year of invoices at year-end is a common, avoidable scramble.

1. Do Facebook and Google ads charge SST in Malaysia?
Yes. Since 1 March 2024, both add 8% service tax to every ad charge billed to a Malaysian account, up from 6%. It shows on your receipts and monthly tax invoice.
2. Does TikTok Ads charge SST too?
Yes. TikTok's own Malaysia DST help article says accounts with a Malaysian business address pay 8% whenever money is charged to the account. The calculator uses 8% for TikTok too.
3. How do I work out the ad spend from a charge that includes SST?
Divide the charge by 1.08 for bills from 1 March 2024. A RM 1,080 charge is RM 1,000 of spend and RM 80 of tax. Pick "Total charged, tax included" in question 2 and the calculator does this for you.
4. Was the rate always 8%?
No. Overseas digital providers charged 6% from 1 January 2020. The rate rose to 8% on 1 March 2024. Pick the older date in question 3 to check an invoice from before the change.
5. Does the SST also apply to my agency's management fee?
The 8% in this calculator is on ad spend only. A management fee is billed separately by the agency and may carry its own tax, so check your agency invoice. Our Google Ads management fee guide keeps the two costs apart.
