By 30 December, most Malaysian shoppers have finished their Christmas buying and started thinking about the new year. Many are on leave, children are still on school holiday, and phones are busy. If your offer is ready, it is one of the easiest selling windows of the year.
This guide from ZenWeb, a Google Partner agency with 500+ Malaysian clients, gives you a ready-made 72-hour plan for a new year sale campaign: timing, budget, channels, creative and measurement. Quick Answer: A New Year countdown sale is a time-boxed offer that ends at a fixed moment, usually midnight on New Year’s Day. Running it for 72 hours, from 30 December to 1 January, keeps the urgency real, fits the holiday mood and stops your discount from training customers to wait. It suits online stores, outlets and service firms alike.
A month-long year-end sale and a 72-hour countdown do different jobs:
The window also suits the Malaysian calendar. New Year’s Day 2027 falls on a Friday and is a public holiday in most states, though not in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu. Many people take leave from 30 December, so mobile browsing stays high all three days.
Quick Answer: Start planning by Monday 14 December 2026. Lock the offer and stock by 18 December, build the page and ads before Christmas, tease warm audiences on 28–29 December, and go live at 00:00 on Wednesday 30 December. The sale ends at 23:59 on Friday 1 January 2027.
Late December is crowded: your Boxing Day sale may still be running, and the school holiday lasts until 31 December, as our guide to school holiday marketing in Malaysia explains.
| Date | Phase | Main tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 14 Dec 2026 | Plan | Set the goal, margin floor and deadline; pick channels |
| By Fri 18 Dec | Lock offer | Confirm discount or bundle, stock levels and delivery promise |
| 21–24 Dec | Build | Landing page, ads, email and WhatsApp copy, tracking tests |
| Mon 28 – Tue 29 Dec | Tease | Early-access sign-ups; “starts Wednesday” posts to warm audiences |
| Wed 30 Dec, 00:00 | Launch (hour 0) | Sale goes live; launch email and WhatsApp; ads on |
| Thu 31 Dec | Middle (hours 24–48) | Reminders by day; lighter evening spend during countdown events |
| Fri 1 Jan 2027 | Final day (hours 48–72) | “Last 12 hours” push; ends 23:59 |
| Sat 2 Jan 2027 | Wrap-up | Turn off sale ads, thank buyers, switch pages back |

Add this window to your marketing calendar template so next year’s countdown is not a scramble. Our guide on how to plan a marketing campaign covers goal-setting in more depth.
Quick Answer: Split the 72 hours into six blocks. Launch hard on Wednesday, keep steady reminders on Thursday, ease off during New Year’s Eve events, then push hard from Friday morning to the 23:59 deadline. Each block gets its own message, so warm audiences never see the same ad twice.
Many 72-hour plans push hardest on New Year’s Eve night. In Malaysia that evening goes to countdown events, dinners and family, so attention drops. Wednesday and New Year’s Day afternoon are where buyers are.
| Time block | Message | Main channels | Ad intensity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 30 Dec, 00:00–10:00 | “It’s live: 72 hours only” | Email, WhatsApp to early-access list | Medium |
| Wed 30 Dec, 10:00–23:59 | Headline offer and best-sellers | Meta, Google Search, TikTok | High |
| Thu 31 Dec, 08:00–18:00 | “2 days left” and social proof | Retargeting, Google Search | Medium |
| Thu 31 Dec, 18:00–Fri 1 Jan, 09:00 | Light “Happy New Year” greeting | Organic social only | Low |
| Fri 1 Jan, 09:00–18:00 | “Final day” and bundle reminder | Retargeting, email, WhatsApp | High |
| Fri 1 Jan, 18:00–23:59 | “Last hours, ends midnight” | Retargeting, Search, last email | Highest |

Send the final email around 19:00 on 1 January, not at 23:00, and keep someone on WhatsApp duty both evenings for last-minute questions.
Quick Answer: For a small online store, a 72-hour new year sale campaign typically needs RM 900–3,000 in ad spend, on top of the discount itself. Put about 10% into the teaser, 30% into launch day, 25% into New Year’s Eve day and 35% into New Year’s Day. Late-December CPMs run above normal, so these are estimates, not quotes.
A shop with a big email and WhatsApp list needs less paid reach than a new brand. Use this split as a starting point:
| Phase | Share of budget | Est. Meta CPM | Est. Google Search CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teaser (28–29 Dec) | 10% | RM 15–30 | RM 0.60–2.50 |
| Day 1 (Wed 30 Dec) | 30% | RM 20–40 | RM 0.80–3.00 |
| Day 2 (Thu 31 Dec) | 25% | RM 20–38 | RM 0.80–3.00 |
| Day 3 (Fri 1 Jan) | 35% | RM 22–45 | RM 0.90–3.50 |

On Google Ads, the logic in our Christmas Google Ads final-week guide applies: bid for the days that convert, not the days that are busy.

Quick Answer: Your own channels come first: email and WhatsApp to people who already know you, then retargeting on Meta and Google, then Google Search for people already looking. TikTok and broad prospecting help only if you built audiences earlier in December. A sale page with a live timer ties it together.
A visible timer helps when the deadline is real; our look at countdown timers on sale pages shows when they hurt trust. If you built a Christmas gift guide page, add a New Year banner so its traffic is not wasted.
Quick Answer: Run one simple headline offer that a customer can understand in three seconds: a flat discount, a “spend RM X, get a gift” deal or a New Year bundle. Avoid layered codes and fine print. Bundles often protect margin better than deep discounts, and a fresh-start theme fits January buying better than a clearance message.
| Offer type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat % off | Healthy margins, loyal list | Training buyers to wait |
| New Year bundle | Raising order value | Hiding the real saving |
| Gift with purchase | Premium products | Running out of gifts |
| Prepaid package | Salons, gyms, tuition centres | Unclear expiry terms |
Our guide to festive bundle offers shows how to price a bundle that still makes money. Keep the discount and deadline genuine: “was/now” claims fall under Malaysia’s price rules, covered in sale and discount advertising rules.
Quick Answer: Keep New Year creative upbeat, inclusive and focused on fresh starts, goals and family time. Avoid heavy party, alcohol and nightlife imagery, which can put off part of a mixed Malaysian audience. Show the offer, the end time and the product in the first second, and use vertical video for Reels, Stories and TikTok.

Quick Answer: In this modelled scenario, a homeware store spends RM 1,500 on ads over the teaser and three sale days, sells 48 orders at an average of RM 120, and earns RM 5,760 in revenue, a 3.8x return on ad spend. New Year’s Day delivers the most revenue, which is why it gets the biggest budget share.
These numbers are illustrative, not a promise; they show how revenue usually moves across the window.
| Day | Ad spend | Orders | Revenue | ROAS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teaser (28–29 Dec) | RM 150 | 4 | RM 480 | 3.2x |
| Wed 30 Dec | RM 450 | 14 | RM 1,680 | 3.7x |
| Thu 31 Dec | RM 375 | 10 | RM 1,200 | 3.2x |
| Fri 1 Jan | RM 525 | 20 | RM 2,400 | 4.6x |
| Total | RM 1,500 | 48 | RM 5,760 | 3.8x |

If day one falls well below plan, check the page and tracking before raising bids. Our sale day traffic spike guide lists the usual culprits.
Quick Answer: Before 30 December, confirm the offer, stock, deadline, sale page, tracking, ad and message schedules, and customer-service cover, then place a real test order on mobile. Ten minutes of checking on 29 December prevents most of the costly problems we see on launch night of a new year sale campaign.
For a pre-flight list you can reuse all year, see our campaign launch checklist.
Quick Answer: Measure a new year sale campaign on profit, not on clicks. Track revenue, orders, average order value, cost per order and return on ad spend for the full 72 hours, then compare them with a normal three-day period. Also note new customers gained and list sign-ups, because these pay off in January.
| Metric | Where to find it | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Gross profit after discount and ads | Store backend and ad invoices | Higher than a normal three-day period |
| Cost per order | Ads Manager, Google Ads, GA4 | Below your margin floor |
| Average order value | Store backend | Up, if bundles or gift thresholds worked |
| Revenue by channel | GA4 with UTM-tagged links | Owned channels carry a large share |
| New customers and sign-ups | CRM or email platform | A list to nurture before CNY |
Tag every email and WhatsApp link using our guide to setting up UTM tracking, so you can see which channel really sold. Note three lessons for next December while they are fresh.
A New Year countdown sale works because it is short, honest and well timed. Plan it by mid-December, tease it on 28–29 December, run it from Wednesday 30 December to 23:59 on Friday 1 January 2027, and put most of your budget behind launch day and the final hours. Lead with your own lists, back them with retargeting, and keep the creative inclusive.
Once your new year sale campaign ends, January brings new buyers and messages. Our guide to New Year marketing campaign hooks for January picks up from here. Seventy-two hours, from 30 December to 1 January, works for most SMEs. It is long enough for people on leave to see the offer and short enough to keep real urgency.
Tease it to warm audiences on 28–29 December 2026. Plan it from 14 December so the offer, page and ads are ready before Christmas.
No. On Friday 1 January 2027 it is a holiday in most states, but not in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu. Online buying stays active nationwide.
As a planning estimate, small online stores spend about RM 900 to RM 3,000 across the teaser and three sale days. Your margin and cost per order decide the final figure.
Avoid it. Extending a “final” deadline makes customers doubt your next countdown. If demand is strong, plan a separate January campaign instead.
