Year-End Sale Facebook Ads: Best Objective for December
TL;DR: For a December year-end sale, the Sales objective is the best default for Facebook ads, optimised for purchases if your pixel records enough of them. If it does not, optimise Sales for add to cart, or for WhatsApp conversations if you close sales in chat. Service firms should use Leads. Keep Awareness and Engagement for a short warm-up, and avoid Traffic as your main sale campaign.

Every December, Malaysian SMEs set up a year-end sale on Facebook and Instagram, then pick the wrong box on the first screen of Ads Manager. The campaign objective is the one setting that tells Meta who to show your ads to. Pick Traffic and Meta finds people who click. Pick Sales and it hunts for people who buy. That one choice can decide how much stock you actually clear before New Year.

This guide from ZenWeb, a Google Partner agency with 500+ Malaysian clients, shows which objective suits each type of business and when to switch. It also covers what December ads cost and how to measure results from 12.12 to New Year 2027. If you are new to Meta’s six objectives, our plain-English guide to Facebook campaign objectives explains each one first.

Meta Ads Campaign Types and Objectives Explained

1. What Is the Best Facebook Ads Objective for a Year-End Sale?

Quick Answer: The best objective for most year-end sale campaigns is Sales, because it tells Meta to look for people likely to buy. What changes by business is the optimisation event inside it: purchases for busy online stores, add to cart for smaller ones, and conversations for shops that sell through WhatsApp.

Meta now groups every campaign under six objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Meta’s own guide to choosing an advertising objective in Ads Manager says to start from the business result you want. For a December sale, that result is orders or enquiries, so match the objective to how your customers actually buy:

Notice what is missing: Traffic. It looks cheap because Meta finds people who click a lot, but those people rarely buy. Use it only for a gift guide or blog page you want people to read. Want the cost side of each choice? See Meta Ads cost by objective.

Key takeaway: Pick the objective that matches where your sale is actually closed: your website, your chat inbox, a phone call or your shop floor.

2. When Should You Start Your Year-End Sale Facebook Ads?

Quick Answer: Start building audiences in late November, right after Black Friday, and launch your Sales campaign by Monday, 14 December 2026, after 12.12. That gives Meta about two weeks to learn before the peak days around Christmas and Boxing Day, and the objective stays the same until New Year.

December is busy in Malaysia. The year-end school holiday runs from 4 December (Group A) and 5 December (Group B) to 31 December 2026, and Christmas falls on Friday, 25 December. Use this lead-time plan, with the objective for each phase:

Source: ZenWeb recommended schedule based on the 2026 Malaysian sale and holiday calendar (KPM year-end school holiday, federal Christmas holiday). Adjust phases to your own sale dates.

Why launch by 14 December? Meta’s page about the learning phase explains that delivery is less stable while an ad set learns, and that a significant edit restarts learning. A campaign launched on 23 December may still be learning on Christmas Eve. If you plan a short New Year push, our New Year countdown sale plan covers the 72-hour version, and the Boxing Day sale guide covers stock clearance after 25 December.

Key takeaway: Warm up with cheap objectives in late November, then lock one Sales campaign in place by 14 December. In the peak weeks, adjust budgets and creatives and leave the objective alone.

3. How Much Do Facebook Ads Cost in December by Objective?

Quick Answer: In ZenWeb-managed Malaysian accounts, December CPMs typically run 15–35% above a normal month, and Sales campaigns carry the highest CPM because Meta shows them to likely buyers. A higher CPM is fine if the cost per purchase holds. These figures are estimates and vary by niche.

Each objective buys a different audience, so each has its own price. Here is what to expect in December 2026:

Budget guide for a December year-end sale (planning estimates, not rules):

  • Small shop testing Meta: RM 50–100 a day on one Sales campaign. Below that, purchase optimisation rarely gets enough data, as our Facebook Ads minimum budget guide explains.
  • Established online store: 1.3–1.6x your normal daily budget from 14 to 31 December, weighted to the gift peak and Boxing Day.
  • Tax: Meta’s page About Malaysia Service Tax explains how service tax is added for Malaysia-billed accounts. Your card is charged slightly more than the budget you set.
  • Split: around 60–70% prospecting and 30–40% retargeting. Our prospecting vs retargeting budget guide shows how to adjust it.

For normal-month benchmarks, see Facebook Ads cost in Malaysia and Facebook cost per lead in Malaysia. If you want to know why festive CPMs jump, our guide to Facebook Ads cost during Raya explains the auction maths, which works the same way in December.

Key takeaway: Cheap clicks and cheap likes rarely turn into cheap sales. Judge each objective on cost per purchase or cost per qualified chat.

4. How to Set Up a Sales Campaign for Your Year-End Sale

Quick Answer: Check your pixel and Conversions API first, then choose the Sales objective, pick the optimisation event your account can feed, keep ad sets few and broad, and exclude recent buyers. Launch by 14 December and avoid big edits until the year-end sale ends.

Many December campaigns we audit lose money because of set-up problems. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Check tracking. Confirm Purchase and Add to Cart events fire once each. Our Meta Pixel and Conversions API setup guide walks through the checks.
  2. Choose Sales. Use a manual Sales campaign, or an Advantage+ sales campaign if you have a product catalogue. Our Advantage+ shopping campaigns guide explains the automated option.
  3. Pick the event you can feed. Purchase if you get about 50 a week; Add to Cart if you do not; Conversations if you sell in chat.
  4. Keep it simple. One or two ad sets with broad targeting. Each extra ad set splits the data Meta needs to learn.
  5. Exclude recent buyers. Remove last-30-day purchasers from prospecting, as shown in our Meta Ads exclusions guide.
  6. Load creatives up front. Upload four to six ads at launch so you can pause losers without restarting learning.

Selling through chat? Set the conversion location to WhatsApp and follow our click-to-WhatsApp ads setup guide. If your ad set shows “Learning limited” in December, read how to get out of the learning phase before you add budget.

Key takeaway: The right objective only works with clean tracking and enough events. Fix the pixel first, choose an event you can feed, and keep the structure lean.

5. What Creative Works for December Facebook Ads in Malaysia?

Quick Answer: December creative should show the offer, the deadline and the product in the first second, in a vertical format for Reels and Stories. Keep the tone inclusive for a multi-faith audience, and give each phase of the year-end sale its own message instead of one ad running all month.

Rules we use with Malaysian clients:

  • Lead with the offer and the date. “Year-End Sale: Up to 40% Off, Ends 31 Dec” beats a generic festive greeting.
  • Change the message by phase. Gift ideas before 25 December, clearance after it, “last day” on 31 December.
  • Show the delivery cut-off on gift ads, so late buyers are not disappointed.
  • Use “Season’s Greetings” for mixed audiences. Christmas is a religious festival for Malaysian Christians, so avoid using church or nativity images to push discounts.
  • Speak to families. Children are on holiday all month, so show uses for family time and travel.
  • Rotate before fatigue. Watch frequency; our guide to high Facebook ad frequency shows when to refresh.

For tone in depth, read Christmas ads cultural tone in Malaysia. Timing matters too: many employees receive year-end bonuses, covered in year-end bonus season ads. Families on the road are covered in school holiday marketing in Malaysia, and tourist areas in catching Visit Malaysia year-end tourists. A strong Christmas gift guide page also gives your ads a better landing page than the home page.

Key takeaway: One December ad cannot do every job. Plan three or four messages that match the phase, and keep the festive tone warm and respectful.

6. Should Facebook Ads Run Alone in Your Year-End Sale?

Quick Answer: No. Facebook and Instagram create demand by showing your offer to people not yet searching. Google Ads captures people who search for it, and WhatsApp or email reaches past buyers at almost no cost. A December sale works best when each channel does one clear job.

ChannelDecember job
Meta AdsFind new buyers and retarget visitors with the sale offer.
Google AdsCapture gift and “sale” searches; bid by delivery deadline.
TikTokReach younger shoppers with short demo videos.
SEO and websiteKeep one sale page at the same URL every year so it gains rankings.
WhatsApp and emailEarly access for past buyers; last-call reminders on 31 Dec.

On the search side, read whether to bid higher on Christmas Google Ads; the sizing method in our 11.11 Google Ads budget guide works for December too. B2B sellers face a different month entirely, covered in why B2B leads drop in December.

Key takeaway: Let Meta create demand, Google catch the searches and WhatsApp or email bring back past buyers. Each channel needs its own message and its own budget line.

7. Does the Objective Really Change Year-End Sale Results?

Quick Answer: Yes. With the same budget, the same products and the same creative, the objective decides who sees the ads. In the illustrative scenario below, a Sales campaign earns nearly twice the revenue of a Traffic campaign, while Engagement brings plenty of likes but very few orders.

Here is a modelled example. An online homeware store spends RM 6,000 on Meta from 14 to 31 December, with an average order value of RM 180:

Illustrative scenario: one RM 6,000 year-end sale budget under four objective set-ups
Modelled link clicks, orders, revenue and return on ad spend for an online store spending RM 6,000 on Meta ads from 14 to 31 December under Engagement, Traffic, Sales with add-to-cart optimisation and Sales with purchase optimisation.

Engagement2,10025RM 4,5000.75x
Traffic9,00054RM 9,7201.6x

Sales, purchase3,20096RM 17,2802.9x

Source: illustrative scenario modelled by ZenWeb using typical December cost and conversion patterns from managed Malaysian accounts. Not a real client result.

Traffic wins on clicks and loses on orders. The purchase set-up wins only because the store has enough sales history; a newer store would get its best result from the add-to-cart set-up. Measure your own campaign this way:

  • Track cost per purchase and return on ad spend, not reach or likes.
  • Compare with last December, not a quiet November week.
  • Check orders in your store or till, because Meta’s attribution can claim more than GA4; see why Meta claims more sales than GA4.
  • For chat sellers, count closed sales per conversation, not chats alone.

Year-end sale Facebook Ads checklist:

  • Pixel and Conversions API tested by 11 December
  • Objective and optimisation event chosen from the table in Section 1
  • Warm-up audiences built from 30 November
  • Sales campaign live by 14 December with four to six creatives
  • Recent buyers excluded from prospecting
  • Phase messages ready: gift peak, Boxing Day, last day
  • Sale ads switched off on 1 January 2027
Key takeaway: The objective decides who sees your ads. Choose the one closest to a real sale that your account can feed, then judge it on orders and revenue.

8. Conclusion

For a December year-end sale on Facebook and Instagram, choose Sales for products, Leads for services and conversations for chat sellers. Use Engagement and Awareness only to warm up. Lock the campaign by 14 December, then change budgets and creatives rather than objectives. 9. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best Facebook Ads objective for a year-end sale?

Sales, for most online stores and chat sellers. Optimise for purchases if your account records about 50 a week, add to cart if it records fewer, or conversations if you close sales on WhatsApp. Service firms should use Leads.

2. Is the Traffic objective good for a December sale?

Rarely. Traffic finds people who click often, not people who buy, so clicks look cheap but orders stay low. Use it only to send readers to a gift guide or blog post.

3. When should I launch my year-end sale Facebook ads?

Warm up audiences from late November and launch the main Sales campaign by 14 December 2026, after 12.12. This gives Meta time to learn before the Christmas and Boxing Day peaks.

4. Should I change the objective during December?

No. Changing the objective means building a new campaign that starts learning again. Keep one Sales campaign running and adjust budgets, creatives and offers by phase instead.

5. How much should I spend on Facebook ads for a year-end sale?

As a planning estimate, small shops start around RM 50–100 a day, and established stores spend about 1.3–1.6x their normal daily budget from 14 to 31 December. Your margin and cost per purchase decide the final figure.
