MailerLite Review: Is It the Best Budget Email Tool?
TL;DR: MailerLite is still the easiest cheap email tool to use — but it is no longer the most generous. In June 2026 the free plan dropped to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, down from 1,000 subscribers less than a year earlier. This MailerLite review shows who still wins on the paid tiers, and who should stop reading and look at Brevo instead.

1. Introduction

For years, MailerLite was the answer every Malaysian SME got when they asked for a cheap email tool that didn’t feel cheap. Clean editor. Fair price. A free plan you could actually run a business on.

Then the free plan got cut. Twice.

Most reviews still quote the old numbers, which makes them useless for anyone shopping in 2026. So this MailerLite review starts from the current pricing page — and asks a narrower question than “is MailerLite good?” It asks whether the budget crown still belongs to MailerLite at all, or whether it moved while everyone was admiring the drag-and-drop editor. Our breakdown of what email marketing costs in Malaysia sets the wider budget.

Here’s a demo of the platform before we open the invoice.

2. What MailerLite Is in 2026 (and What It Isn’t)

Quick Answer: MailerLite is an email marketing platform with a website builder, landing pages, signup forms, automations and a digital-product checkout bolted on. It is not a CRM, and it does not send transactional email — that lives in a separate MailerSend subscription. Think newsletter tool with a shopfront, not a marketing stack.

The product has grown, but it has grown sideways rather than upward. What you get on any plan:

  • Email campaigns and automations. Drag-and-drop editor, a simple editor, and a custom HTML editor — all three available even on free.
  • Websites and landing pages. A genuine site builder with blog and SEO fields, not just a thank-you page.
  • Digital products and bookings. Sell an e-book or a paid consultation without a separate checkout tool.
  • Forms, pop-ups, surveys and quizzes. The lead-capture side is unusually complete for the money.

What you don’t get is the plumbing. Transactional email — order confirmations, password resets, booking receipts — is not part of MailerLite. The pricing page’s answer at every tier is “Try MailerSend”, a separate product with a separate bill. Brevo includes that on every plan, which is one reason this comparison is closer than the sticker prices suggest. If email is still a new line item for you, start with the fundamentals of email marketing before you shop for software.

Key takeaway: MailerLite is a newsletter tool that also builds pages and sells products. If your website needs to send receipts, budget for a second tool.

3. MailerLite Pricing 2026: The Four-Tier Ladder

Quick Answer: MailerLite has four tiers in 2026 — Free, Comfort from USD12 a month, Power from USD25, and custom Enterprise above 200,000 subscribers. Price scales with your subscriber count. Comfort removes the MailerLite logo; Power removes the sending and feature caps.

The ladder is short, which is the point. Two paid rungs, USD13 apart — not the USD481 cliff our Brevo review found on that platform.

EnterpriseCustom volumeDedicated success manager, dedicated IP, deliverability supportQuote-based (200k+ subscribers)

Source: MailerLite pricing page, July 2026. Ringgit figures illustrative at RM4.20/USD; taxes excluded.

Two discounts are worth knowing: paying yearly saves 10%, and registered nonprofits get 30% off any plan. Both are published; neither needs a sales call.

Key takeaway: Comfort at USD12 is the tier most Malaysian SMEs will actually live on. Power is worth it only when the caps — not the price — start hurting.

4. The Free Plan Shrank 75% in Nine Months

Quick Answer: MailerLite’s free plan allowed 1,000 subscribers until September 2025, 500 after that, and just 250 from 16 June 2026 — while the monthly send allowance fell from 12,000 emails to 2,500. This is the single most important fact in any MailerLite review written this year, and most published reviews still quote the old numbers.

Two cuts, nine months apart. Here’s the shape of it.

Sources: MailerLite, “Free plan update: What you need to know” (June 2026 change) and EmailToolTester’s MailerLite review (September 2025 change).

MailerLite gave something back: free accounts now get custom templates, promotional pop-ups, the HTML editor and a blog — features that used to be paid. For a solo consultant with 180 contacts, that’s a good trade.

For everyone else it’s a squeeze. A 250-contact ceiling matches Mailchimp’s free tier, so MailerLite’s old headline advantage is gone. And there’s a deadline attached: from 13 August 2026, free accounts also get hard feature caps — 3 automations, 3 forms, 1 landing page, 1 website, 1 digital product. Go over any of them and the account is restricted: no sending, no imports, no editing what you built.

Key takeaway: If a review quotes 1,000 free subscribers, it was written before September 2025. The real figure is 250, and the send cap is 2,500 a month.

5. The Billing Rule Nobody Reads

Quick Answer: MailerLite counts subscribers cumulatively within a billing cycle. Anyone who was active at any point in the month counts — even if you deleted them days later. Delete 200 contacts on the 1st and they still count until your billing date. On paid plans, crossing the tier ceiling upgrades you automatically and charges the card.

It’s buried in MailerLite’s pricing FAQ, and it catches anyone who thinks a mid-month clean-up will save money. It won’t. Three rules worth a sticky note:

  • Cumulative counting. Your subscriber count resets on your billing anniversary, not when you delete people. A purge on day 2 does nothing to this month’s bill.
  • Automatic upgrades on paid plans. Cross your subscriber ceiling and MailerLite moves you up a tier and charges the card. You get a warning, not a choice.
  • The Comfort send multiplier is tier-based. You get 10× the top of your subscriber tier — on the up-to-1,000 tier that’s 10,000 emails a month, whether you have 210 subscribers or 990.

None of this is dishonest; it’s all published. But it changes how you run the account. The discipline that keeps you on a cheap tier is the same discipline that makes email work: clearing out a decaying list before your billing date, and segmenting properly so fewer emails go to people who never wanted them.

Every email tool eventually bills you for the people you’re not emailing. The only defence is a list you actually maintain.

Key takeaway: Clean your list in the week before your billing date. Doing it after costs you a full cycle at the higher tier.

6. Is MailerLite Still the Cheapest Free Plan?

Quick Answer: No. On free tiers, Brevo now stores 400× more contacts than MailerLite and sends roughly 3.6× more email a month. MailerLite’s free plan ties Mailchimp on contacts and beats it on sending — but the outright budget crown has moved, and this MailerLite review can’t pretend otherwise.

Three free plans, side by side, as they stand in July 2026.

The free-tier verdict is simple: if “free forever” is the requirement, Brevo wins and it isn’t close. Our roundup of free email marketing tools covers the rest of the field.

But free tiers are a poor way to pick software you’ll still be using in three years. The paid comparison is where MailerLite earns its reputation back: USD12 for a tool that removes its own branding, gives you 50 automations and three seats is hard to beat.

Key takeaway: MailerLite lost the free-plan argument in June 2026. It still wins the USD12-a-month argument.

7. What Malaysian SMEs Actually Use MailerLite For

Quick Answer: In ZenWeb-managed accounts, MailerLite is used for two things: sending campaigns and capturing leads through forms and pop-ups. Automations, the website builder and the digital-product checkout are barely touched — which means most SMEs are paying for breadth they never open.

Here’s what gets used, month to month.

The automation row is the one that should bother you. Roughly one in four accounts ever builds a workflow — and the workflow is what turns email from a monthly chore into revenue. Nothing about MailerLite’s editor causes that. It’s a staffing problem in a software costume, and it’s the same pattern we found in our Semrush review: capable tool, nobody rostered to open it.

The forms number is the happy surprise. The pop-ups and embedded forms are strong, and the free plan gives you three — enough for a small site to start collecting properly instead of hoping people email in.

Key takeaway: Pay for Comfort when someone is genuinely going to build the automations. If nobody is, the free plan is doing everything you’d actually use.

8. Where MailerLite Falls Short in Malaysia

Quick Answer: No WhatsApp channel, no SMS, no transactional email, no real CRM, and billing in US dollars. For a Malaysian SME whose customers live in WhatsApp, MailerLite handles one channel well and ignores the one that closes sales.

Four honest limitations, in the order they’ll bite:

  • WhatsApp is simply absent. MailerLite doesn’t do WhatsApp or SMS at all — and for most Malaysian retailers and service businesses that’s the primary sales channel. Our guide to WhatsApp marketing in Malaysia covers what you’d be running separately.
  • Transactional email needs a second subscription. Order confirmations and booking receipts route through MailerSend, billed apart from your MailerLite plan.
  • Design control is basic. The editor is a pleasure precisely because it doesn’t let you do much — spacing is coarse and blocks can’t nest. Fine for newsletters, frustrating for a designed campaign.
  • Reporting and CRM depth are thin. If you need revenue attributed per flow, this isn’t the tool; our Klaviyo review covers the platform built for that job.

There’s a quieter cost too: every invoice is in US dollars, so your card’s FX spread rides along, and SST applies where local rules require it. The RM50 in this MailerLite review is an illustration, not a quote.

Key takeaway: MailerLite is a one-channel tool. If WhatsApp is where your customers actually reply, you’re buying half a stack.

Email is one channel. Your buyers use four.

Search, ads, email and WhatsApp only work when someone runs them as one funnel. See what a Google Partner agency runs for Malaysian SMEs →

9. Should You Choose MailerLite in 2026?

Quick Answer: Choose MailerLite if you’ll pay the USD12 and you want the least painful tool in the category. Choose Brevo if free matters more than pleasant. Choose Klaviyo if you run an online store. Those three sentences are the whole decision.

MailerLite is the right pick when:

  • You’re paying anyway. On Comfort it’s cheaper than Mailchimp at the same list size, and far easier to use.
  • Whoever sends the email isn’t a marketer. The editor is the least intimidating in the category — that matters more than any feature list.
  • You want forms, pop-ups and landing pages in one tool, without a separate page builder.
  • Your list is small, active and growing slowly. Under 250 contacts, free is still perfectly good.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Free is non-negotiable and your list is over 250 people. Brevo stores 100,000 contacts for nothing.
  • You sell online and need revenue tracked per flow.
  • WhatsApp is your main channel, or your site must send transactional email.
  • Nobody owns email at your company. Switching tools with no owner just relocates the problem — and if your open rates are flat, the platform was never the cause. The full field is compared in our guide to the best email marketing software for Malaysian SMEs.

And the option most SMEs skip: don’t buy a tool, buy an outcome. When email runs inside a managed retainer, the subscription becomes a line item someone else optimises — and the AI email tools now drafting the copy become leverage rather than a novelty. Our guide to marketing automation for Malaysian SMEs shows what that looks like day to day.

Key takeaway: MailerLite is the best paid budget email tool for most Malaysian SMEs. It is no longer the best free one.

10. Conclusion

MailerLite is still the nicest email tool in its price band. Nothing in this MailerLite review changes that: the editor is calm, the forms are strong, and USD12 buys more than the same money buys anywhere else.

What changed is the free plan. Two cuts in nine months took it from 1,000 subscribers to 250, and sending from 12,000 emails a month to 2,500. If you came here because someone told you MailerLite has the most generous free tier, that advice expired in June 2026. The honest answer now: pay the USD12, or use Brevo.

The deeper point is the one no software review wants to make. Neither tool decides who receives your email, what it offers, or what happens after the click. That’s strategy, and it’s the work ZenWeb does every day. Our digital marketing services for Malaysian businesses treat email as one part of a funnel — never as a monthly send you tick off a list.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many subscribers does MailerLite’s free plan allow in 2026?

250 active subscribers, and 2,500 emails a month. The limit dropped from 500 on 16 June 2026, having already fallen from 1,000 the previous September. From 13 August 2026 free accounts also cap out at 3 automations, 3 forms, 1 landing page, 1 website and 1 digital product.

2. How much does MailerLite cost in Malaysia?

MailerLite bills in US dollars. Comfort starts at USD12 a month and Power at USD25 — roughly RM50 and RM105 at RM4.20 to the dollar — with the price rising as your subscriber count grows. Paying yearly saves 10%, nonprofits get 30% off, and Malaysian invoices carry SST where local rules require it.

3. Is MailerLite better than Mailchimp?

For most Malaysian SMEs, yes — it’s cheaper at the same list size and considerably easier to use. Mailchimp still leads on templates and the integration ecosystem. On the free tier the two now tie at 250 contacts, though MailerLite lets you send 2,500 emails a month against Mailchimp’s 500.

4. Does MailerLite support WhatsApp or SMS?

No. MailerLite is email-only, with no WhatsApp or SMS channel on any plan. For Malaysian businesses where WhatsApp is the main sales channel, that gap has to be filled by a separate tool.

5. Do I still need an agency if I use MailerLite?

MailerLite sends the email. It doesn’t decide the offer, the segment, or the follow-up. In ZenWeb client tracking, only about one in four SME accounts ever builds an automation — the feature that makes email profitable. If you want enquiries rather than opens, the missing piece is strategy, not software.
