A stranger is standing outside a locked door at 1am, choosing who to let near their house from four lines of text. That is the whole sale.
This guide covers what a locksmith click really costs in Malaysia, the verification gate Google runs everywhere except here, where the budget quietly leaks, and four data sets on click cost, wasted spend, ad copy and answering speed.
ZenWeb is a Google Partner running Google Ads campaigns for 500+ Malaysian businesses. Locksmith accounts convert faster than almost any trade we manage, and waste more when nobody is watching them.

Quick Answer: Because the customer is inviting a stranger to defeat their own security, at night, while stressed. Every other trade is judged on price and speed. A locksmith is judged on whether the person who turns up is safe to let near the door.
That changes what the ad has to do. Most trade ads argue that they are the better choice. A locksmith ad has to first argue that it is a real business:
So Google Ads for locksmiths is won by whoever looks accountable in four lines of text. The rest of the channel mix sits in our digital marketing guide for locksmiths.
Quick Answer: Between RM 1.80 and RM 8.60 a click. Malay trade terms like “tukang kunci Kajang” are the cheapest route to a booked job at RM 25, while emergency lockout terms cost RM 5.40 a click and still book at RM 43.
| Keyword cluster | Avg CPC | Click to call | Call to booked | Cost per booked job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malay trade plus township (“tukang kunci Kajang”) | RM 2.30 | 13.1% | 70% | RM 25 |
| Emergency lockout (“locksmith open now”) | RM 5.40 | 16.8% | 74% | RM 43 |
| Price checks (“harga tukang kunci”) | RM 1.80 | 5.4% | 41% | RM 81 |
| Car key replacement (“kunci kereta hilang”) | RM 7.90 | 12.4% | 61% | RM 104 |
| Digital and smart lock installation | RM 4.60 | 6.9% | 48% | RM 139 |
| Commercial and master key systems | RM 8.60 | 5.8% | 44% | RM 337 |

Read the last column, not the second. A RM 337 commercial booking looks alarming next to a RM 25 lockout until you remember one is a master key contract and the other is a RM 120 door opening. Cross-trade benchmarks sit in our breakdown of Google Ads CPC by industry in Malaysia.
Quick Answer: Locksmith is one of the few trades Google polices by name. Advertisers must pass advanced verification in the United States and Canada, and cannot advertise at all in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Belgium. Malaysia sits outside both lists, so the auction is wide open.
Google’s own policy states that ads for local services can run outside restricted areas even if the business has not completed verification. For a Malaysian locksmith that is good news and bad news in the same sentence:
Every locksmith guide written for an American audience assumes a verification tick you cannot get here. Ignore that advice and build the trust into the copy instead, which is also what makes an ad worth clicking at all — see our notes on writing Google Ads copy that converts.
Quick Answer: Just over half of an unmanaged locksmith budget reaches someone who wants a locksmith. The rest goes to people learning to pick locks, looking for a job in the trade, or buying a padlock on Shopee — and those groups book almost nothing.
| Search-term type | Share of spend | Booked jobs per 100 clicks |
|---|---|---|
| Real service intent (lockout, car key, install) | 54% | 11.2 |
| DIY and lock picking (“cara buka mangga”) | 14% | 0.2 |
| Hardware and key blanks (marketplace shoppers) | 12% | 0.4 |
| Course and job seekers (“kursus tukang kunci”) | 9% | 0.0 |
| Outside the response radius | 7% | 1.1 |
| Wrong job entirely (safes, car repair, welding) | 4% | 0.6 |

Four in ten ringgit are buying an audience that will never call. Run Google Ads for locksmiths on phrase and exact match first, and add broad only once the conversions are trustworthy. The reasoning sits in our guide to keyword match types. Block these from day one:
Review search terms weekly for the first two months using the routine in our walkthrough on building a negative keyword list. If the calls that do arrive feel fake, our fix for spam leads from Google Ads covers the rest.
Quick Answer: Google removed the option to create new call-only ads in February 2026, and existing ones stop serving in February 2027. Locksmith accounts built entirely on call-only ads will go dark unless they move to responsive search ads carrying call assets.
This lands harder on locksmiths than on most trades, because call-only was the natural build for a business whose product is a phone call. Google published the deprecation on 3 October 2025 with both dates fixed. Three things change once you move:
Rebuild in a quiet month rather than during the Raya lockout season. Our guide to Google Ads landing pages covers the page half of that move.
Quick Answer: Naming the township beats everything, at RM 40 a booked job against RM 96 for a generic “24 hours, call now” ad. Stating the call-out fee and showing your registration both more than halve the cost, mostly by lifting the booking rate rather than the click rate.
| Lead message in the ad | CTR | Click to call | Call to booked | Cost per booked job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “24 Hours Locksmith, Call Now” | 4.1% | 9.2% | 52% | RM 96 |
| Township and arrival time named | 5.3% | 15.6% | 73% | RM 40 |
| Registration and trade body shown | 4.4% | 13.9% | 76% | RM 44 |
| Call-out fee stated upfront | 3.6% | 12.8% | 71% | RM 51 |
| “IC and ownership proof required” | 3.2% | 11.1% | 81% | RM 51 |
Source: ZenWeb client tracking, Malaysian locksmith accounts, 2024-2026. Cost per booked job modelled at a constant RM 4.60 average cost per click so the copy effect is isolated.
Notice the pattern. The ownership-proof line has the worst click-through rate in the table and the best booking rate, because it repels the one caller you never wanted and reassures the ones you did. That is the whole discipline behind Google Ads for locksmiths: buy fewer clicks that convert harder.

Quick Answer: Calls answered within three rings book at 78% and cost RM 39 a job. Call back five minutes later and the booking rate falls to 44%, because the customer already found somebody else. Past half an hour, the same ad spend costs RM 507 a job.
| How the call was handled | Share of calls | Booked | Cost per booked job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Answered within three rings | 41% | 78% | RM 39 |
| Answered after 15 to 60 seconds | 22% | 66% | RM 46 |
| Missed, returned under 5 minutes | 14% | 44% | RM 69 |
| Missed, returned in 5 to 30 minutes | 12% | 21% | RM 145 |
| Missed, returned late or never | 11% | 6% | RM 507 |

More than a third of ad calls in this trade are missed on the first attempt, usually because the locksmith is already under a dashboard or up a ladder. A second number, a partner on standby, or a chat fallback pays for itself before any bid change does. If those calls are not showing up in the account at all, our fix for Google Ads call tracking not working is the place to start.
Quick Answer: Car key work costs RM 7.90 a click against RM 2.30 for house lockouts, and the caller wants a make, model and year answered before anything else. Mixed into one campaign, the expensive keyword eats the budget meant for the cheap one.
Transponder and remote work behaves like a parts business wearing a locksmith’s uniform. Split it out and the account gets easier to read:
Paid search buys the urgent half of this demand while the pages keep earning it — see the car key section of our locksmith SEO guide.
Quick Answer: Malaysia issues no individual locksmith licence, so the recognised trust signals are an SSM-registered business, a local council premise licence and trade body membership. Service tax also splits your campaigns: home repairs are exempt, the same work in an office is not.
Gabungan Persatuan Peniaga Kunci Malaysia, the registered locksmith trade association, sets out the checks a customer is told to run: business name and member ID, a matching person, and proof of ownership before any lock is opened. Those are exactly the assets your ad and landing page should carry, because the customer has been taught to look for them.
Tax draws the second line. The Ministry of Finance confirmed in April 2024 that repairs at residential premises sit outside service tax, while the same job in a commercial building does not. Quote a home price to an office enquiry and you have started an argument, not won a contract. Tax on the ad spend itself is a separate matter, covered in our guide to Google Ads billing and SST in Malaysia.
In a market with no licence to display, the paperwork you do show becomes the licence.
Quick Answer: Count calls over 45 seconds, WhatsApp taps tagged by page, and jobs actually completed. Without that third number, smart bidding learns to buy whoever rings most — in this trade, the price checker who never books.
Locksmith tracking leaks because there is no checkout — the job ends on a doorstep with cash or a transfer. The minimum workable setup:
The mechanics live in our Google Ads conversion tracking setup guide, and the chat-specific gaps in measuring WhatsApp enquiries properly.
Quick Answer: About RM 700 a month covers one rider across two or three townships, which is roughly 20 booked jobs once the negatives are in place. Add budget by widening the radius or the job mix, not by raising bids inside the same small area.
Spend on Google Ads for locksmiths follows coverage, not ambition, because your real limit is how far you can drive before the customer gives up waiting. A rider covering Puchong and Kinrara beats a van claiming the whole Klang Valley on the same money. Budget floors, and what happens below them, sit in our guide to the Google Ads minimum budget in Malaysia.
Quick Answer: Bidding on the whole Klang Valley, hiding the call-out fee, running one campaign for every job type, letting Performance Max spend unsupervised, and answering calls only when convenient.
In rough order of what they cost:
The cross-industry version of this list is in our roundup of Google Ads mistakes that waste budget.
Quick Answer: Bid on townships and Malay trade terms, block the learners and job seekers, put your fee and registration in the ad, split car keys from lockouts, move off call-only ads, and answer in three rings.
Google Ads for locksmiths is unusual because the platform has decided, in seven other countries, that this trade needs supervision — and left Malaysia to supervise itself. That is an opening for any locksmith willing to look accountable in public. Start with two townships and your three most common jobs, hold it ninety days, and let the answered calls compound into repeat work.
Clicks run from RM 1.80 on price searches to RM 8.60 on commercial master key terms. A booked job costs RM 25 from Malay township keywords and RM 43 from emergency lockout terms, on a starting budget of roughly RM 700 a month.
No. Google requires advanced verification for locksmith ads in the United States and Canada, and blocks them entirely in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden and Belgium. Malaysian locksmiths can advertise without verification, which is why the trust signals must sit in the ad copy.
Not new ones. Google removed the option to create call-only ads in February 2026, and existing ones stop receiving impressions in February 2027. Move to responsive search ads with call assets and a landing page worth arriving at.
Ads first if this week’s diary has gaps, because paid search buys the 2am lockout immediately. Cost per job then holds steady, so run search alongside it — organic keeps getting cheaper per job while the auction price does not.
