Most seasonal SEO advice was written for a market where the calendar sits still. Black Friday is always the fourth Friday of November. Christmas is always 25 December. You can build a content plan once and reuse it for a decade.
Malaysia does not work like that. Our two largest festive peaks are set by lunar calendars, so they move — and not in the same direction as each other. That single fact breaks most seasonal SEO playbooks you will find online, because they quietly assume last year’s timing is this year’s timing.
This guide plans festive SEO the way the Malaysian calendar actually behaves. The dates are verified; the rest is what we have learned running SEO campaigns for Malaysian SMEs at ZenWeb across several Raya and CNY cycles. First, where the demand data comes from.

Quick Answer: Seasonal SEO fails in Malaysia when it is planned against a fixed calendar. Hari Raya Aidilfitri moves roughly 11 days earlier each year and Chinese New Year swings between late January and late February. A plan built on “same time as last year” is wrong by two to three weeks before it starts — a scheduling error, not an SEO prioritisation one.
Look at the actual dates. Raya drifts steadily in one direction. CNY does not drift at all — it oscillates, jumping forward almost three weeks in 2026 and then walking back again.
| Year | Chinese New Year | Hari Raya Aidilfitri | Raya moved | Days apart |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 29 Jan (Wed) | 31 Mar (Mon) | — | 61 |
| 2026 | 17 Feb (Tue) | 21 Mar (Sat) | 10 days earlier | 32 |
| 2027 | 6 Feb (Sat) | 10 Mar (Wed) | 11 days earlier | 32 |
| 2028 | 26 Jan (Wed) | 27 Feb (Sun) | 12 days earlier | 32 |

Two things fall out of that table.
The right-hand column surprises people. In 2025 you had 61 days between CNY and Raya — room to run two campaigns back to back. From 2026 that gap closes to 32 days and stays there: one month to wind down one festive push and stand up the next.
Not sure whether your site can rank in time for the next festive peak?
The honest answer depends on your current authority, and that is measurable today. See how our SEO service works →
Quick Answer: The three Malaysian peaks build at different speeds. CNY demand starts earliest and climbs gradually from about eight weeks out. Raya compresses into the final three to four weeks. Year-end sale days are the sharpest spike of all. One seasonal SEO timeline cannot serve all three — forecast each peak separately.
This is where the generic advice — “start three to six months before your peak” — is not wrong, just useless. It gives you one number for three different demand shapes.
| Time before the date | CNY | Hari Raya | Year-end sale days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 weeks out | 14% | 9% | 5% |
| 8 weeks out | 27% | 18% | 8% |
| 6 weeks out | 52% | 33% | 15% |
| 4 weeks out | 78% | 61% | 34% |
| 2 weeks out | 96% | 92% | 71% |
| Peak week | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| 2 weeks after | 21% | 16% | 4% |

Read the six-week row. CNY has already reached half its peak while Raya has barely reached a third — the reunion-dinner effect. CNY spending involves planning, so people search early. Raya buying clusters into the final fortnight of Ramadan.
The year-end column is the cruel one. Four weeks out, only a third of the demand exists; publish then and the sale ends before you rank. Those pages must be indexed months earlier — the same runway problem a brand-new site faces before it ranks at all.
Quick Answer: Anchor the plan to the festive date, not to a month. Find the confirmed date, count backwards in weeks, and let the calendar month fall where it falls. This is the one habit that keeps seasonal SEO in sync year after year, and it takes about ten minutes to set up.
The mistake is planning in months. “We do our Raya content in February” works until Raya lands on 27 February and February becomes far too late. Plan in weeks-before-the-date instead.
Sixteen weeks sounds excessive until you check the arithmetic for a real year. For Raya 2027 on 10 March, the publish deadline is mid-November 2026. For CNY 2027 on 6 February, it is mid-October 2026. Both deadlines sit in the previous calendar year — which is exactly why teams that plan “in the new year” miss both.
Ten minutes with a calendar, once a year, prevents the most expensive seasonal SEO mistake: being right but late. If time is tight, our guide on which SEO fixes to do first pairs with this countdown, and a marketing calendar template gives you somewhere to keep it.
Quick Answer: Keep one festive URL live all year and update it annually. A dated URL like /raya-promo-2026/ expires the moment the year turns, so it starts from zero every cycle. The permanent URL compounds instead — the single highest-leverage decision in Malaysian seasonal SEO.
This part of the advice is not unique to Malaysia, and you will find it on plenty of SEO blogs. What is unique is how much it costs here, because our festive pages get rebuilt more often than most — new theme, new offer, new year in the slug.
| URL strategy | Cycle 1 | Cycle 2 | Cycle 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| One permanent URL, updated each year | Position 14.2 | Position 7.6 | Position 4.1 |
| New dated URL every year | Position 15.1 | Position 14.8 | Position 15.3 |

The bottom row never improves — it cannot. Every year the page is new again, with no history, no links, no track record. Three cycles of effort produce the same position as the first.
So put the year in the title and the copy, never in the URL. Keep /raya-promotion/ live in September even though nothing is happening on it — that off-season ageing is what makes next year’s ranking possible. The same discipline behind a landing page that ranks while converting applies here, and if the offer maps to something you sell all year, point at your service page rather than build a second one.

Quick Answer: The festive keywords with the biggest spike convert the worst. Broad terms like “raya promotion” pull volume and browsers. Specific and branded festive queries pull far less traffic and far more enquiries. Seasonal SEO that chases the spike is chasing the wrong number.
Every festive season, someone reports a traffic record and a flat sales month. Both are true. Here is why.
| Festive query type | Peak search volume | Enquiry rate |
|---|---|---|
| Broad festive (“raya promotion”) | 0.4% | |
| Festive + product (“raya hamper corporate”) | 1.6% | |
| Local intent (“[service] near me”) | 4.7% | |
| Branded festive (“[brand] raya sale”) | 8.9% |
Source: ZenWeb client tracking across Malaysian SME accounts, 2024–2026. Volume indexed to the broad festive term at 100.
The bars and the numbers run in opposite directions, and they do it cleanly. The broadest term carries eight times the volume of the branded one and converts at roughly one-twentieth the rate. A visitor searching “raya promotion” is window-shopping the entire internet. A visitor searching your brand plus “raya sale” has already decided.
This does not mean ignore the broad terms — it means budget for them honestly. Broad festive content is brand-building, measured in years. The enquiries this season come from the bottom two rows. Keeping the two numbers apart is what stops a good season being mistaken for a bad one, and it underpins any honest SEO ROI calculation.
Quick Answer: Year-end is not one season but three events in eight weeks — 11.11, 12.12 and Christmas. They are the only Malaysian peaks with fixed dates, which makes them the easiest to plan and the hardest to win, because everyone else can plan for them too.
Here the fixed calendar works in your favour. 11.11 is always 11 November — set the countdown once and reuse it forever.
The catch: ease of planning is no advantage when everybody has it. Competition at year-end is fiercer than at Raya or CNY, and marketplaces outrank almost everyone on the sale-day terms. Chasing “11.11 sale” against a marketplace wastes your seasonal SEO budget.
What works better for an SME:
/year-end-sale/ URL serves both and ages twice as fast as two half-used pages. One quiet advantage: year-end sits four to six months before the next CNY, so December’s pages are still ageing when your CNY runway opens. Planned together, one evergreen content effort covers both.
Quick Answer: The off-season is when seasonal SEO is actually won. Rankings take months to build, so the quiet months are the only time you have enough runway to earn them. Festive season is for harvesting, not planting — a distinction worth building into your first 90 days.
Malaysia’s festive calendar leaves you roughly six clear months: April to September. That is not downtime. That is your entire production window.
The uncomfortable implication: if you are reading this four weeks before your peak, seasonal SEO cannot rescue this season. Run ads now, and start the SEO for the next one.
Quick Answer: The five expensive seasonal SEO mistakes are deleting the page after the season, dating the URL, starting four weeks out, reusing last year’s dates, and judging the season on traffic alone. All five are scheduling or measurement errors rather than technical ones.
These come up every cycle. None are exotic — they are the ordinary ones that quietly repeat.
None are unfixable, and none need a bigger budget — just an earlier decision. Our round-ups of SEO mistakes that keep you off page one and the SEO myths Malaysian businesses still fall for cover the year-round versions.
Seasonal SEO in Malaysia is not harder because the competition is tougher. It is harder because the calendar refuses to sit still, and almost every playbook online was written for one that does.
The fix is unglamorous. Look up the real date every year. Count backwards in weeks. Keep one permanent URL and update it. Separate the traffic number from the enquiry number. Do the building in the quiet months. None of that requires a bigger budget than you already have — only an earlier decision.
The businesses that win Raya and CNY are rarely the ones that spent the most. They are the ones that published in November. As search itself keeps changing, that discipline gets more valuable, not less — which is roughly the argument running through our honest predictions for the future of SEO.
Count back 16 weeks from the confirmed Raya date for your publish deadline, and 8 weeks for your refresh. For Raya 2027 on 10 March, that means publishing by mid-November 2026 — the previous calendar year, which is why “we will do it in the new year” is already too late.
Because the dates move. Hari Raya arrives 10 to 12 days earlier each year, and Chinese New Year swings across a three-week window — it landed on 29 January in 2025 but 17 February in 2026. Reusing last year’s timings puts you weeks out of sync.
No. Keep one permanent URL and update the content annually. In our client data, a permanent festive URL reached position 4.1 by its third cycle while dated URLs stayed around position 15 every year. Put the year in the title tag, never in the slug.
Yes, but only if you start early enough to rank before demand arrives. If your peak is under six weeks away, ads will serve you better this cycle. Seasonal SEO compounds across years, so the honest question is whether you will still be trading next Raya.
Track festive traffic and festive enquiries separately in Search Console and your analytics. They routinely move in opposite directions, because the highest-volume festive queries convert at around 0.4% while branded festive queries convert near 8.9%. A traffic record with flat enquiries is normal, not a mystery.
