Most people buy a backlink checker to answer one question: how many links do I have? That is the least useful question you can ask it.
At ZenWeb we run link audits for Malaysian SMEs every week, and the number at the top of the dashboard almost never matters. What matters is which domains link to you, which ones your competitor has and you do not, and which ones are quietly dragging you down. Different tools answer those questions with different data, and they disagree far more than the marketing pages admit.
This guide compares the paid and free backlink checker tools a Malaysian business would realistically buy, in ringgit, and shows what happened when we ran the same 40 client domains through all of them. The video below covers the field; the numbers that decide it start after it.

Quick Answer: A backlink checker shows you one company’s crawl of the web, not Google’s. It reports the links its own robot found, scored with its own authority metric. Two tools can look at the same site and disagree by thousands of links, and both are telling the truth about what they saw.
Every tool here runs its own crawler and builds its own index. Nobody has Google’s. Once you accept that, the metrics get easier to read. If the vocabulary is new, start with what a backlink is and why it still matters.
The one thing no backlink checker can tell you is whether Google counts a link. That verdict lives inside Google, and no vendor has access to it.
Quick Answer: Ahrefs and Majestic are link-first tools built on their own crawlers. Semrush and Moz bundle link data inside a wider suite. Ubersuggest is the budget option, and Google Search Console is the free source of truth. Which is best depends on whether links are your main job or one of ten.
Two of these are specialists. The rest give you link data as one module among many, which is fine if you already pay for the suite, and expensive if links are all you came for.
| Tool | Best at | Weak at |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Biggest live index; fastest at spotting new links | Price; credits burn quickly on competitor research |
| Semrush | Backlink Audit and disavow workflow in one place | Costliest if link data is the only reason you subscribe |
| Majestic | Trust Flow, link context, and a 20-year historic index | Dated interface; no keyword or audit tools around it |
| Moz Link Explorer | Readable reports; Spam Score is easy to explain to a boss | Smallest index of the paid tools; query caps on the entry plan |
| Ubersuggest | Cheapest paid entry; enough for a small site’s basics | Shallow index; misses many of the links that matter |
| Google Search Console | Links Google itself recorded, free, no simulation | Your site only; no competitor data; no authority metric |
The two suites have full write-ups of their own if you want the detail: our Semrush review, our Ahrefs review, and the head-to-head in Ahrefs vs Semrush. Moz and Ubersuggest get the same treatment in our Moz Pro review and Ubersuggest review.

Quick Answer: Entry plans run from RM0 (Google Search Console) to RM588 a month (Semrush Pro). Majestic Lite gives you serious link data for about RM210, less than half the price of Ahrefs Lite at RM542. For a Malaysian SME doing link work a few days a month, the gap between those two is the whole decision.
| Tool (entry plan) | Link data at that tier | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Your own site, top 1,000 linking domains | RM0 |
| Ubersuggest Individual | Basic backlink report, any domain | RM122 |
| Moz Pro Starter | Link Explorer, capped at 20 queries a month | RM206 |
| Majestic Lite | Fresh Index, Site Explorer, Trust Flow | RM210 |
| Ahrefs Lite | Site Explorer, new and lost links, competitor gaps | RM542 |
| Semrush Pro | Backlinks, Backlink Audit, Link Building tool | RM588 |
Source: aggregated from each vendor’s published pricing (Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic, Moz, Ubersuggest), July 2026. Converted at RM4.20 = US$1; monthly billing, before annual discounts.
Majestic Lite is the quiet bargain in that table. It is the least fashionable tool on the list and it still returns a serious index, Trust Flow and link context for the price of a Moz plan that caps you at twenty link lookups a month.
The catch: Majestic gives you links and nothing else. If you also need keywords, you are back to comparing suites in our Malaysian SEO tools guide.
Quick Answer: We pooled every referring domain that any tool found for 40 Malaysian SME sites, then checked what each tool saw on its own. The best performer, Ahrefs, found 78% of the pool. Search Console found links no paid crawler had. The gap is the point: one tool is a sample, not a census.
| Tool | Share of pooled referring domains found | Found by this tool only |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | 78% | 14% |
| Semrush | 71% | 11% |
| Majestic (Fresh Index) | 63% | 9% |
| Moz Link Explorer | 52% | 4% |
| Google Search Console | 46% | 8% |
| Ubersuggest | 41% | 2% |
Source: ZenWeb client tracking across 12 industries, Malaysia, 2024–2026. Pool = every unique referring domain found by at least one tool for the 40 sites audited.
Two lines here are worth arguing with your agency about. Ahrefs leads the field and still misses more than one referring domain in five. And the free tool, Search Console, surfaced 8% of the pool that no paid crawler had, because Google follows links their robots never reach.
The rule we use on client audits: paid tool for competitor research, Search Console for your own profile, and never report a link count from one tool as if it were the truth.
Your competitor outranks you and you cannot see why?

Quick Answer: For your own website, yes. Google Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools together give a Malaysian SME a workable picture of its own links for RM0. The moment you want to see a competitor’s links, every free tool stops — and that is exactly what you are paying the RM210 to RM588 for.
The free tier is stronger than most agencies will tell you. It is also sharply limited in one direction.

Quick Answer: We know the exact date a link goes live on the placements we manage, so we can measure how long each tool takes to report it. Ahrefs is fastest at a median of 3 days. Search Console takes about 12. If you report link building monthly, that lag decides which tool you show the client.
| Tool | Median days to report | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | 3 days | |
| Majestic (Fresh Index) | 4 days | |
| Semrush | 5 days | |
| Moz Link Explorer | 9 days | |
| Google Search Console | 12 days | |
| Ubersuggest | 14 days |
Source: ZenWeb client tracking, Malaysia, 2024–2026. Based on link placements where the publication date was known; median across placements.
The lag is why link building looks like it failed in month one. A campaign that placed links a fortnight ago will look thin in Ubersuggest, almost invisible in Search Console, and perfectly healthy in Ahrefs. Same links, three verdicts.

Quick Answer: The median Malaysian SME site we audit has 47 referring domains — not thousands. A quarter of those get flagged as toxic by at least one tool, but only 6% get flagged by every tool. Spam scores disagree far more often than they agree, which is why you never disavow on one tool’s say-so.
| Measure (median per site) | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referring domains | 34 | 41 | 47 |
| Share from directories and listings | 46% | 41% | 33% |
| Flagged toxic by at least one tool | 18% | 21% | 24% |
| Flagged toxic by every tool checked | 4% | 5% | 6% |
| Nofollow, sponsored or UGC links | 39% | 44% | 51% |
Source: ZenWeb client tracking across 12 industries, Malaysia, 2024–2026. Toxic flags compared across Semrush, Moz and Majestic scores on the same referring domains.
Two rows should change how you use a backlink checker. The toxic gap is the first: 24% flagged by someone, 6% flagged by everyone. Most “toxic” links are one vendor’s opinion, and disavowing on that basis has stripped out perfectly good links for businesses we later took on as clients.
The second is scale. Forty-seven referring domains is a normal Malaysian SME profile. If a tool shows a rival with 40 and you have 30, that gap is closeable this year. It is not the wall the dashboard makes it look like. When links genuinely are poisonous, follow the process in our guide to finding and removing toxic backlinks.

Quick Answer: Start free with Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Add Majestic Lite at about RM210 when you need competitor links. Pay for Ahrefs Lite at RM542 only when link building is an active, funded project — and buy Semrush instead if the same person also runs your rank tracking and audits.
Whatever you buy, remember what the tool cannot do. It will not earn you a link, remove a bad one, or persuade a Malaysian publisher to mention you. That work is human, and it is what an SEO service is actually paid for. Weighing software against an agency? Our take on AI SEO tools versus traditional ones makes the same point from a different angle.
Quick Answer: The best backlink checker tools for a Malaysian SME are Search Console (free) paired with Majestic Lite (RM210) or Ahrefs Lite (RM542) when competitor data matters. Every tool sees a slice of the web, so read them as evidence, not verdicts.
Backlink data is the most confidently wrong data in SEO. Six tools looked at the same 40 Malaysian websites, and no two agreed on how many links those sites had, how fast they arrived, or which ones were poisonous. The businesses that get value from these tools are not the ones with the biggest subscription. They are the ones who use the numbers to pick a target, go and earn the link, then check next month whether it stuck.
Google Search Console, paired with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Search Console reports the links Google itself recorded for your verified site, capped at your top 1,000 linking domains, which is well above what most Malaysian SMEs have. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools adds Ahrefs’ own crawl of your site free. Neither shows competitor links.
Entry plans run from about RM122 a month (Ubersuggest) to RM588 (Semrush Pro), converted at RM4.20 to the US dollar. Majestic Lite sits near RM210 and Ahrefs Lite near RM542. Search Console is free and remains the most accurate view of your own profile.
Ahrefs, if backlinks are the reason you are buying. It found the largest share of referring domains in our audit of 40 Malaysian sites and reported new links fastest, at a median of three days. Semrush wins when you also need its Backlink Audit and disavow workflow beside keyword and ad data.
Because each one crawls the web itself and none of them has Google’s index. Across the Malaysian sites we audit, the best-performing tool found 78% of all referring domains discovered, and every tool surfaced links the others missed. Different numbers are normal; identical numbers would be suspicious.
Rarely, and never on one tool’s score alone. In our audits, about a quarter of referring domains get flagged as toxic by at least one tool, but only 6% get flagged by every tool. Check the page yourself, confirm the verdict in a second tool, and disavow only when the link is clearly manipulative.
A tool finds links. It does not earn them.
